Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach have pledged to get to the bottom of what happened to allow more than 500 ducks to get trapped in an oil sands tailing pond in northern Alberta. They have both expressed concern at the negative impact the incident will have on selling Canada, and the oil sands projects, as environmentally responsible. Well yeah!
The incident happens at a bad time for the province. Deputy Premier Ron Stevens just got back from Washington, D.C., where he was touting the oilsands as both a plentiful supply of energy and a sustainable one.
Harper admitted the incident doesn't help the country as it markets its oil around the world.
"I'm not here to make any excuses for the particular event that occurred in the last few days. It's a terrible event. It's not going to anybody's image any good."
