3 Men Swept to Sea During Tsunami

A Del Norte, California man was killed on March 11 after being swept out to sea by the tsunami caused by the massive earthquake that struck Japan. CNN notes that the 25-year-old man was confirmed dead by authorities.

The man and two of his friends were trying to photograph the tsunami as it hit the California coastline, but were swept out to sea near the mouth of the Klamath River, south of Cresecent City. Two of the men made it to shore.

Crescent City saw eight-foot tsunami waves that rushed about 200 yards inland in around five surges. 3000 coastal residents had been evacuated.

The coast of Del Norte County and Crescent City, specifically, appear so far to the hardest hit areas in California. Authorities said 3,000 people were evacuated from Crescent City and surrounding areas.
