Whales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound capacity to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans.

Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The exhausted, terrified and confused whales are eventually driven into the shallows. Here the bloodbath begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed. The blood-stained bay is soon filled with horribly mutilated and dying whales.

The Faroese celebrate the butchery of their victims in an carnival atmosphere of entertainment. Indoctrinated from an early age, children are often given a day off school to watch the fun. They run down to the bay and clamber over the carcasses of slaughtered whales.

Every year around 2,000 whales are driven ashore and cruelly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands, mid-way between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. For centuries the Faroe Islanders have hunted pilot whales, driving entire schools into killing bays, where they are speared or gaffed from boats, dragged ashore and butchered with knives. Although the Islands are a protectorate of Denmark, they have their own Government and regulations governing the pilot whale hunt or "grind" as it is known.

Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.

The drive hunt is a practice abandoned elsewhere many decades ago, and now outlawed by other European states. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands have no subsistence need for whale meat, and much of the flesh is left to rot and be dumped; it cannot be exported, as it is polluted with heavy metals and other toxins and therefore cannot meet EU heath standards for human food.

According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).

Chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption, because they are toxic - as revealed by research on the Faroes themselves.

The remote Atlantic islands, situated between Scotland and Iceland, have been one of the last strongholds of traditional whaling, with thousands of small pilot whales killed every year, and eaten by most Faroese.

Anti-whaling groups have long protested, but the Faroese argued that whaling is part of their culture - an argument adopted by large-scale whalers in Japan and Norway.

But today in a statement to the islanders, chief medical officers Pál Weihe and Høgni Debes Joensen announced that pilot whale meat and blubber contains too much mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives to be safe for human consumption.

"It is with great sadness that this recommendation is provided," they said. "The pilot whale has kept many Faroese alive through the centuries."

But in "a bitter irony", they said, research on the impact of the pollutants on the Faroese themselves has shown that mercury, especially, causes lasting damage.

The work has revealed damage to fetal neural development, high blood pressure, and impaired immunity in children, as well as increased rates of Parkinson's disease, circulatory problems and possibly infertility in adults. The Faroes data renewed concerns about low-level mercury exposures elsewhere.

Dear Honorable Prime Minister,

I am pleading with you to suspend Denmark's annual subsidy to the Faroes until an agreement to phase out and end the Faroe Islands' pilot whale 'grind hunts' has been signed between the Faroese home rule government and the Kingdom of Denmark. More than 150 long-finned pilot whales have been killed in the Faroe Islands, a Danish protectorate, since July of this year (2000).

I am horrified that this hunt is conducted in the name of tradition by wealthy islanders, who have no subsistence need for whale meat. The hunt, known as a 'grind', is horrifically cruel, using fishing boats to drive North Atlantic and migratory North Sea Pilot whales into shore and roping and hauling on them until they beach themselves, then sawing at their heads with long knives, severing their spines, and letting them bleed to death.

Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.

Regardless, of whether 'Faroese home rule' means they are virtually an independent nation, their whale hunt IS Denmark's responsibility as the Faroe Islands are an overseas administrative division of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Queen of Denmark is the Faroes' head of state, Denmark is their international representative, their law is the Danish constitution, their money is the Danish crown, and your government gifts them one billion of those crowns every year in an annual subsidy.

I will boycott the Faroese, your country and it's exports, and I will advise my friends, family and clients to do the same until you stop this outrageous abuse of marine animals in your waters.

Sorry, but my understanding of the Portuguese language is less than could be desired. Does www.flickr.com/photos/9183672/3333822554/#com ment72157614... claim that the Faroese want to exterminate the pilot whales because they compete for the fish?

If that is the case, I can assure you that we are not worried about the sqiud eaten by these whales, we are not trying to cull the population, much less trying to to exterminate them.

That kind of thinking is applied to the seal populations many places in the world, I don't know if it's justified or not. But I haven't ever heard anyone suggest that we limit the pilot whale population.

The International Whaling Commission has ended its annual meeting here, leaving many delegates with a resounding sense that nothing has changed.

The meeting cost close to £500,000 ($840,000) and got through 750,000 photocopied documents.

It proclaimed itself firmly in favour of the conservation of whales.

But the killing will continue unchecked, and the commission's own future is now perhaps in more serious jeopardy than ever.

The IWC's committees began a round of preliminary meetings on 24 May, and the political work of the 51 member states' delegations lasted for four full days.

Whaling countries say the species they kill are abundant enough for their catches
Throughout, the ritual unfolded in its time-honoured way; neither the whaling countries nor their conservationist opponents showed any quarter, or expected any.

The whalers - Japan, Norway and Iceland - asked for permission to kill whales for research, or said they would do it anyway because they had refused to accept the 1986 moratorium on the commercial hunt.

All are entitled to their catches under IWC rules. All were told they should not go whaling; all will do so despite the IWC.

They in turn told the meeting the species they are killing are abundant enough for their catches.

They argued for progress towards a lifting of the moratorium, on which they say the science supports them.

Prioritising conservation

As usual, there was no progress, nor can there be before next year's meeting in Italy.

So far, so perfectly predictable, and for anything that had been achieved, you could conclude that everyone might as well have stayed at home.

There was one significant change, though, and it went by the name of the Berlin Initiative.

That commits the IWC to making whale conservation a priority - not, as till now, so there are enough whales for the whalers to catch - but simply for the sake of the whales themselves.

The conservation-minded countries - still a majority at the IWC, though a dwindling one - hailed the initiative's adoption as a historic achievement.

'Terminal irrelevance'

But the whalers say it is a fundamental change to the rules, turning the IWC into something they would never have joined - a club to save whales, and to prevent them ever being hunted again.

They are so incandescent with rage that they are talking of setting up a rival to the commission.

They often do, but this time they say they really are serious.

More ominously, they now claim the backing of politicians, parliamentarians and publics at home.

So the commission, paralysed by the two sides' hostility, appears to be drifting closer to terminal irrelevance.

'Making it work'

But the story does not have to end in tears.

The head of the UK delegation, Richard Cowan, told BBC News Online that the meeting had been "quite positive", and he hoped some of the European Union's new members might feel encouraged to join the IWC.

Vassili Papastavrou, of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said: "The profoundly disappointing thing about this meeting is the number of countries that appear to be joining simply to vote and make political points rather than to contribute to the commission's serious work.

"It's all we've got. It's a global body, and it's up to all of us on all sides of the debate to make the thing work."

How to do that, though, is what nobody seems yet to have discovered.

Faroe islanders told to stop eating 'toxic' whales

Chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption, because they are toxic - as revealed by research on the Faroes themselves.

The remote Atlantic islands, situated between Scotland and Iceland, have been one of the last strongholds of traditional whaling, with thousands of small pilot whales killed every year, and eaten by most Faroese.

Anti-whaling groups have long protested, but the Faroese argued that whaling is part of their culture - an argument adopted by large-scale whalers in Japan and Norway.

But today in a statement to the islanders, chief medical officers Pál Weihe and Høgni Debes Joensen announced that pilot whale meat and blubber contains too much mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives to be safe for human consumption.

"It is with great sadness that this recommendation is provided," they said. "The pilot whale has kept many Faroese alive through the centuries."

But in "a bitter irony", they said, research on the impact of the pollutants on the Faroese themselves has shown that mercury, especially, causes lasting damage.

The work has revealed damage to fetal neural development, high blood pressure, and impaired immunity in children, as well as increased rates of Parkinson's disease, circulatory problems and possibly infertility in adults. The Faroes data renewed concerns about low-level mercury exposures elsewhere.

The medical officers note that it wasn't the Faroese who created the pollution. But "these results have already led to tightened restrictions on pollution worldwide. We must therefore also ourselves acknowledge the consequences."

North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search

The North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO) is an "international body for co-operation on conservation, management and study of marine mammals in the North Atlantic."

The body was founded in 1992 by its current members Norway, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The organisation came about because the nations were (and continue to be) unhappy with the international management of cetaceans and other marine mammals by the International Whaling Commission. NAMMCO believes that whaling should be more extensive than that currently allowed under the IWC moratorium which prohibits all (large species) whaling with a few specific exceptions.

Nations opposed to whaling, such as the United Kingdom, do not recognise NAMMCO's claim to be the right body for management of whale stocks in the North Atlantic, and continue to support the IWC.

[edit] History and structure of NAMMCO

NAMMCO was founded in Nuuk, Greenland on 9 April 1992 by the signatories to Agreement on Cooperation in Research, Conservation and Management of Marine Mammals in the North Atlantic. The Agreement came into force on 7 July 1992 and was itself the product of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Tromsø in 1990 between the Norwegian and Icelandic governments and the Greenland and Faroese home rule governments. The purpose of the organisation is set out in Article 2 of the agreement.

The commission has three parts. The council is the decision-making part of the commission, which requests, and acts on, advice from its management committees, which make proposals for management of marine mammals stocks within the region, and from the scientific committee which reviews current scientific literature and carries out its own scientific research.

The commission also hosts workshops and forums devoted to hunting methods and environmental questions.
