Flights out of JFK International Airport were delayed for 35 minutes after a group of turtles mosied on to the runway, July 8, 2009.   78 diamondback terrapin turtles wandered on to the runway at JFK International Airport and had to be removed before flights could resume.

Diamondback turtles weigh 2-3 pounds and removing them from the runway took manpower and time.  The 78 runway bound turtles were not harmed in the runway removal process and have been relocated to a less disruptive place in the New York state wild.

A runway that juts out into a bay was closed for 35 minutes while 78 diamondback terrapin turtles, each weighing 2-3 pounds (1-2 kilograms), were removed, said a spokesman for airport operator The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

"They came up out of the water," the spokesman said. "It happens, but it doesn't happen a lot."

One of the NYT's editors was on one of those delayed planes, she sent an amusing note about the incident.
