The Bearskins worn by the Guards on ceremonial duty in London do not come from fur specifically shot for this purpose. The Black Bears are shot as part of an annual cull in order to keep the population under control. They are not killed to order. Synthetic fur has been tested but with unsatisfactory results. As an animal lover it is not nice to see animals killed, but it is for the sake of the bears as well as the human population. On the other hand it would also be a shame to see such a tradition die out. We need to come to a reasonable compromise.
