Despite global warming, rising pollution and the problems of obesity, Dublin Council are considering encouraging more people to drive into the City over the Christmas period by giving them free car parking, after demands by those in business.
"Dublin council is planning to make on-street parking free for the Christmas shopping period.
The proposal will be put to councillors next Monday".
I wonder if they will put up more cycle racks?

I think this has to be understood in the context of economic conditions in Ireland at the moment. This is clearly an attempt to boost Christmas sales, and generate economic activity, in an economy in trouble. It's not good for the environment, no, but I dare say that's not Ireland's chief concern right now.

The D.C.Council say one thing and do another. They are all for Reducing Car Dependency and Limiting Access to the City for Cars and all for Promoting Cycling use. But then they go and do this,Pandering to the Motor Lobby by Flooding this Beautiful City with Cars . In every other City in the World that they banned Cars the Cities have Thrived in spite of the Petrol Heads saying that business will be Bankrupct. The Real Reason that there is Less Business in the City is obvious ,The Minister of Hardship the Finance Minister Mr Brian Lenihan Slapping a high Rate of Vat on everything and also a whole Rake of other Taxes. Not to mention the Rip off Mentality of Prices in the Republic of the Consumers by Big Business Interests. In spite of the Pound Sterling and Euro Difference and the Near Parity it is not passed on very well to the Irish Consumer, leading to the Customer being Ripped of. People are either keeping their Money until Christmas or else going up North over the Border to do their Shopping where they can Buy more for their Money. Mr Lenihan would be better off Dropping the Vat and other Taxation at least around the Christmas Period, give the People a Break. You never know it might be the Stimulous Package to get the Economy moving. You cannot Tax a Country out of Recession it only leads to Revolution.

Clearly Christmas in Dublin is a time of blatant commercialism, sadly ignoring the EU's pollution fines.
What about people who prefer to 'Send a Cow' for Christmas? Not all of us want to head to the shops and buy rubbish made in China, that someone will just throw away the next day or is that discouraged by the Council? We are just pandering to materialism.
If motorist have to pay in these car parks maybe they should put on the back of the ticket, a 20% discount on all shops which have Irish/EU made goods and/or a 50% discount on all bike shops:-0

I also think they don't want to offend their rich voters.
I think Dublin Critical Mass need to do some 'cycling round the Council'.

Yes, buy online so people won't use their poxy car parks. Maybe we can turn these hideous multi-storey car parks to public housing. Failing that, demolish them on Youtube, so we can all watch.
