Duluth Flood: Streets Washed Away, Zoo Deluged
Major flooding in Duluth, Minnesota has wreaked havoc on city streets, forcing residents from their homes. The rain is still pouring. I-35 is closed through Duluth, as are its downtown tunnels. Widespread flooding is reported throughout Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties.
Below you can see eyewitness photos and video footage from the flash floods that struck the Duluth area on June 19 and 20, 2012.
Duluth's Lake Superior Zoo was hit hard, deluging many of the animals' habitats. Most of the zoo's barnyard animals have died.
A state of emergency has been declared in Duluth. During the chaos, the polar bear and a few seals managed to escape. The polar bear was apprehended right away, but the seals made it out into the streets. The photo below shows a newly-escaped seal on a Duluth roadway.
