Dump Site 41, a proposed dump on the pristine Alliston Aquifer, has become one of the most contentious environmental issues in Ontario today. This week, Living at the Barricades speaks with Mark Calzavara of The Council of Canadians, and Ray Millar, a resident of Tiny Township in anticipation of a major rally set for July 25, 2009. We’ll also hear from local residents who used our call in number to tell us why on they think the Ontario government and Simcoe County officials seem determined to build a dump on one of the purest sources of water in Canada.

Music on this weeks show:

Trash - New York Dolls

My heart is a piece of garbage. Fight Seagulls! Fight! - Rae Spoon

We live in a Dump - They Might Be Giants

Will you be at the rally to give us an eyewitness report?

The rally is about saving this water, this land for future generations. But all we ask for now is that politicians – municipal, provincial, federal – step back and consider. That’s why we’ve called it Rally for a Moratorium

First of all, the venue has changed. Rain is expected, so the rally will be held at the Perkinsfield park and pavilion. From Elmvale, go north on Highway 27, turn left at County Road 6 and continue north to Balm Beach Road. The pavilion is on the right.

The rally starts at 1:30 p.m., but for those who come early, there will be music, drumming and good company.

You’ll find our speakers to be passionate and knowledgeable advocates of good water, responsible waste management and effective political action:

-Maude Barlow, head of the Council of Canadians and Senior Advisor on Water to the President of the United Nations.

-David Crombie, former Toronto mayor, former federal cabinet minister and Commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Future of the Toronto Waterfront

-Charlie Angus, New Democrat MP for Timmins-James Bay, one of the leaders of the successful fight to ban Toronto’s garbage from the Adams Mine.

-Mary Muter, Georgian Baykeeper For Ever.

Local residents and authorities should not have the power to abuse the environment like that. They should be held responsible for the damage they are doing. The judge who signed the injonction to stop the protesters is biased and should loose his job. Pressure should come from everywhere to make these people wake up to what they are really doing. I think the so-called experts who say there is no danger for the water have no credibility at all, regardless of the number of millions they collected for their expertise.
