Earth Hour Quietly Acknowledged
Saturday night, Earth Hour, a group of people gathered in Nanaimo to discuss food -- local food, food security, nutritious food. The evening started with a shared, locally sourced meal followed by discussion groups. Interested people participated in finding out where local food could be sourced, discussed difficulties with bureaucracy, and fair return to food producers.
Nanaimo is located on Vancouver Island, an area that once produced much more food than today. It is uniquely positioned to regain some of that production.
At eight thirty a candle was lit and the lights dimmed. The group maintained silent contemplation of the earth and its bounty for two minutes.
It looks like the message about food security is beginning to be heard.

We hear for we listen and we act once it is almost to late. The STOP signs at crossing only come up after the fatal accident has occurred.

Locally grown food will be the wave of the future as we will soon no longer be able to afford to transport our produce from far away places.
