"Many crops were damaged in the wild elephants rampages," he said.Meanwhile, Teungki A. Rani Ulele Lhok, a local village head, said the elephants` behavior had made the villagers restless. They had tried to drive the animals away by using a traditional method but it did not work. He regretted that local authorities had ignored the disturbance.
"We don`t understand why nobody has come to help the villagers. Or maybe, they will only come after a human has become a casualty," he said.

Chili peppers deter elephants, and provide a cash crop too.
Test sites in Africa have proven to be effective as well as profitable. Not only an added income source, but help villagers get a good night's sleep.

There has also been some success using the recorded sounds of swarming bees to deter elephants. Course they were african bees. but worth a try. Placing hives in trees seems to scare many off.
But the chili pepper experiment has had proven success.
