Elizabeth Carlisle was a Petland employee who drowned two rabbits in the backroom of the Akron Ohio store, and posted the picture on Facebook of her smiling and holding up the two dead rabbits (the picture is graphic so be warned).

When a friend made a comment on her Facebook page, Elizabeth replied:

"[T]he manager took the pic for me. [S]he reminded me that there were people outside as [I] was swearing at them to just hurry up and die but then she was so kind as to take this picture."

From other comments it became clear that these two rabbits had suffered terribly as they had deep wounds from being allowed to fight each other, one had an eye missing and what staff thought was a broken jaw and paralysis from the waist down.

Now the Petland location in Akron has been closed due to public outcry over the treatment of the two animals. Petland Inc. has terminated the store owner's franchise agreement and the store will not reopen. Petland has said they will not allow animal abuse of any kind.

PETA wants sales of rabbits banned at all Petland stores.

Elizabeth Carlisle has been charged with animal cruelty and will appear in Akron Municipal Court on August 17th.

The Akron Humane Society released the following statement late Wednesday afternoon:

Many individuals are inquiring about the drowning of two bunny rabbits at the Chapel 1-Jill Mall Petland store,. The incident was reported to Senior Humane Officer Tim Harland by PETA on July 29. 2009, "Once we received the call, this was treated like any other investigation and I met with Gary Winslow the franchise owner to begin the investigation," said Harland., After a lengthy investigation which included 1-larland interviewing the accused, he determined that the incident did occur and she acted on her own. Today two counts of misderieanor animal cruelty charges were filed in Akron. Municipal Court,, These are M Class charges which make this an enhanccable crime which means if she is ever charged. with animal cruelty again it will turn into a felony..

"The Humane Society of Greater Akron investigates cruelty and abuse in Summit County 365 days a year.. However the use of a social networking website, as was used in this incident, is a bigger twist," said Harland.

Petland had this to say:
This is an isolated incident that is horrific and inexcusable and will not be tolerated. Petland will take any and all action necessary as this does not, in any way, represent the culture and dedication to animal care of the thousands of caring Petland employees working across the country every day."

This is NOT an isolated incident! Stuff like this happens all the time in Petland stores!

I agree, it's not an isolated incident. I rescued a hamster from outside a pet store a few years ago that had just been thrown out the back door and left to die (it wasn't Petland though). I took him home and had him for two years.

You are absolutely correct. I was doing a google search on Petland ... freezing baby mice ... purchasing puppies from puppy mills ... it's all on the internet. Disgusting ... I will never, ever "purchase" a pet ... adoption all the way.

Petland is like a torture place for animals and when I saw the face of that woman Elizabeth Carlisle, grinnig while holding the dead bunnies that she had just drowned, I saw an  UGLY FACE. she should go to a mental hospital, that woman looks crazy but I think she is just mean. I hope she never ever works with animals they are not save with her!

I agree, it was the smiling that really creeped me out too.

I feel horrible when I see any animal that has been hit by a car on the side of the road and that isn't even my fault! I couldn't imagine doing anything to harm an inocent creature INTENTIONALY!!?? This lady needs to be locked up for a looooongg time!.... She is a hateful human being and she can burn in hell as far as im concerned!

Thanks, Amy for drawing attention to this horrible story about human cruelty toward animals.  I just read the description, which is more than enough.

This girl is a psycho, she and her manager should both be charged for what they did to those poor animals.  And God only know what they did to all the other animals that were in there.  Liz did you drown cats and dogs for fun too???  I don't care if they were injured there is a way to properly put down an animal and Liz if at 20 years old you haven't figured that out yet maybe you shouldn't be working at a store like that.

This is why I believe ALL pet stores should be closed...they should sell pet food and that's it...only reputable breeders should sell the "fancy pets"...close these torture chambers now!!!

I completely agree. And I also think that the penalty for such acts should be MUCH stiffer. A misdemeanor is basically just a slap on the wrist. But how do you teach a sicko why its wrong to do something like that? You would have to go to great extremes.

This girl is a sociopath and needs to be locked up. She's sick and deserves nothing less than a padded-cell or prison. All the folks in Akron, OH need to kick her out of town.

Petland has been in the news a lot lately, and not in a good way.  They are currently being sued by former franchise owners and are also facing a class action lawsuit brought by former customers.  While they deny selling dogs from puppy mills, overwhelming evidence indicates otherwise.  Earlier in the year, the manager at another Petland store made the news when one of his own dogs was found dead on the end of a chain, left outside in freezing weather.  Another dog survived, but both were described as dehydrated and malnourished. Yes he was terminated and Petland issued a similar statement about their high standards. Don't believe it. This company has a terrible reputation and anyone who truely cares about animal welfare would not be able to stand working for them.  Also, I don't believe Elizabeth Carlisle acted on her own.  This was probably the store's usual way of disposing of damaged "merchandise."  Learn more about Petland at www.stoppuppymills.org

Redneck POS should be drowned herself.  And I'll do it.

My family and I are shocked at this. For someone to mistreat and kill two beautiful creatures is horrifying just for the pleasure of having fun. I would like to see her supervisor also be charged, wonder how many other coworkers also did this. This girl is seriously sick. If she does not value the life of innocent buns she has no value of life or human lives.

Thanks for uploading the story. I haven't heard about this sort of thing. I am more aware now. Our Petshop doesn't have any pets at all, as the person doesn't have 'the right licence'.

I only read the description of your post, and yes, that was enough. I will keep an eye on our bigger petstores if I ever go round them.

It makes you wonder whether there should be more CCTV in Petland too.

Let her burn in hell.

These people are evil. I am glad to see this Petland closed permanently. I found a dead rabbit in the pen they had them displayed in at Christmas in 2008.  The manager said "these things happen".  I passionately hate these pet stores.  If people did not shop these places they would be forced to close.  I hope this girl does not get a slap on the wrist.  If a person will torture animals I believe they will hurt people. She is sick and evil.

If this fat-ass purple-banged bee-atch Carlisle has a boyfriend (which I seriously doubt), he should kick her out of his life NOW. She's a worthless POS who should end up doing hard time. Have you seen the picture? She thinks she's SO CUTE! I think she's the FUGLIEST thing Facebook has ever seen. Everyone who has friended her should immediately REMOVE her. She needs to be cast out.

Elizabeth Carlisle of Akron, Ohio you're a dead man bitch! Think it's funny to murder 2 innocent creatures? Watch me laugh over your beaten beyond recognition dead body you fucking bitch!

I could not agree more with all of these comments.... Whatever ends up happening to her will be 1000 times to good for her. I rescued both of my cats, one from the cat shelter and the other my brother found on the road after someone threw it out of a car!(it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that it was a petland employee that did that!).... "Purchasing" animals is a cruelty within itself! Ugh! This story makes me SICK!

WOW!!! Lunatic, you said a mouth full! I agree with you!!!! I wish that I cold be alone in a room with her!!! I would inflict the same pain on her that she inflicted on those poor bunnies!! Who does that kind of shit? And how in the hell could she be smiling like that?  She needs to be locked up!!!

i take in orphaned bunnies, racoons and squirrels.the thought of someone purposely harming these sweet creatures makes me physically sick,i'd like to be alone in a room with this twisted POS and show her the pain these helpless little guys felt.

This woman cleary has some serious issues, she should be steralised now at the very very least as there is no way on earth she should be allowed to breed. It's time people like this were stamped out of society and stopping them having children would be a good place to start.

Elizabeth Carlisle is a disgusting human being.....She deserves the same treatment as those poor bunnies got. The bible even says an eye for an eye!! I think that if the law were a little tougher on these animal abusers the FIRST time...that their may not be a second time. People who abuse animals rarely stop there! People who hurt helpless creatures most likely hurt people that are helpless too! This really makes me sick to my stomach!!!! When she dies all the animals she hurt will be waiting for her!!!!!!!!!!

You are so right. My mother always said that anyone who dies, they will not only be suffering in hell for their sins but they will have to face the animals they hurt. They will see their face over and over and over forever and ever.
