NP Rank:
Endangered indigenous bird of prey killed in southern Philippines
This is both sad and appalling. The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) has spent years taking care of these giants of the sky.
Reports released on July 16 indicated that a Philippine Eagle named "Kagsabua" has been killed by a still unidentified perpetrator.
"The incident underscores what we've been suspecting for a long time that young eagles die mainly due to human persecution," Dennis Salvador, PEF executive director told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net.
A team of field researchers headed by Jason Ibañez went looking for Kagsabua for a scheduled re-trapping but instead found the radio and satellite transmitters attached to the eagle buried in a ravine between the towns of Sumilao and Impasug-ong in Bukidnon.
Protected Area Superintendent Felix Mirasol has offered a P10,000 cash reward for information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrator.
"It's too bad that a single person can undo the efforts of the entire Sumilao community in protecting Kagsabua," Salvador said.
He said the outcome of Kagsabua's case would test the limits of Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act.
The Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is the tallest, and one of the rarest, largest and most powerful birds in the world, according to Wikipedia.org.
They number to less than 400 pairs in the wild.

These photos of the Philippine Eagle were taken at the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Davao, Philippines. They belong to a group of Eagles being bred in captivity to be later released in the wild. The eagle that was killed was a product of the center's efforts to release hatched eagles back into the wild.
You can find a lot more Philippine birds at the Philippine Bird Photography Forums it has the most complete photo-guide to the Birds of the Philippines online (a work in progress), all photos taken in-habitat by PBPF photographers. Species represented - 299 out of 614 as of June 22, 2008.

I was asked to contribute these photos of a Philippine Sea Eagle I had captured over our home. I am an Australian living now in the Philippines and sadly comments in the article that these photos are attached to are so true. We all may judge, and believe me I am one of the staunchest supporters of Wildlife and Ecological Preservation in our local area, but sadly, the facts are that the greater percentage of people here in the Philippines, live on less than $5 US a day, and if they get that much they are happy, a tradesman here an Electrician,Plumber, or Carpenter only earns $5 to $7 a day, so one must look at why these killings are happening. The reason is simple it is to put food on their tables, the problem here is that the Education Process is very flawed, throughout most Western nations the emphasis in our schools is all on Ecological Sustainability and the need to look after our Environment here in the Philippines there is no such thing as the teacher here finishes his or her lunch they throw there rubbish on the ground in front of their pupils when the Government here can Educate the Educators into teaching by example these atrocities will also stop. Unluckily the people here have not been told how beneficial it can be to them as a society for both Tourism and jobs to have these animals protected,as I said we need to educate the educators here. As well as these photos here http://www.flickr.com/photos/nasipit/sets/72157604132151513/ you will see more photos of a juvenile Sea Eagle. These pics were taken at such close range because the local children here had heard there was a foreigner (me) living here, so they caught the bird and came to our house to sell it to me, at the time I had only been here a couple of weeks and I knew that the bird was protected but had no other knowledge of how to go about reporting it and to who, for here its not like in the West you have to know the person you are reporting it to is above board as it could be turned around and you are found to be the one in trouble.Well unluckily I don't know what happened to the bird or to the children I have never seen them again and the cost ? Well they wanted $100 US for the bird, more than a months wages and I am sure that this happens throughout the Philippines as I said it's time the govt started educating the educators here and then just then we might get a change to what is happening here regards Peter

It is sad that we are asked to post this photo because the Eagles are endangered and being killed and not because of its mere beauty.
I hope that this small step would inspire people to take care of this beautiful creature.
Oh btw, this picture was taken in wildlife zoo in QC.

This snapshot of an eagle was taken in Montalban Zoo in Montalban Rizal, Philippines. It is in a display cage with other eagles who all seemed (from my viewpoint) that they are well fed and well taken cared of. Here this one has "eagle eyed" me.

This picture was taken from the Philippine Eagle Center in Calinan, Davao City.
Got lucky to have this shot. Some would hide in their gigantic cage as if they are living in the wilds.

This shot was taken at the compound of the Phil. Eagle Center since i'm also a volunteer photographer during the first Eagle release project of the Center in 2003 up tp the present. Well, it's kinda sad to think that we're all doing things here in saving the eagles and this other groups are just killing them., I really can't imagine why they're so cruel.

well my photo was taken last year, after the kadayawan festival. me and a couple of friends wanted to take photos because we had a hard time shooting the festival because of the lack subjects.
alas, we decided to go to the philippine eagle center in malagos, calinan, davao city. luckily arny, was outside. we then asked the caretaker if he can possibly stir the eagle so that he can spread his wings :) and just clicked on the shutter... and the rest is history....
the philippine eagle is one of the majestic birds in the whole world. bigger than the bald eagle, and it's crown, my goodness, truly fit for a king. i do have more shots taken during that day. i'll try to share them as well.
this is one way to create awareness for the eagle. and i hope i've done my part in helping raise awareness.
