EU bans Peking Duck forcing council snoopers to shut down restaurant ovens in Chinatown
Political correctness gone mad or testing shows up safety hazard, whatever Britain's favourite Peking Duck may not be on the menu for some time ...
It is the nation's favourite Chinese dish – adored by millions and a staple feature on the menus of restaurants and takeaways the length and breadth of Britain.
But Peking Duck could now be forced into extinction by an EU ban on the ovens traditionally used to prepare it.
Council inspectors have been busily visiting restaurants that use the ovens and sealing them closed with tape because they do not carry a CE (Conformité Européenne) mark certifying that the equipment meets safety standards on carbon-monoxide emissions laid down by Brussels.

liamssoft, I like this story. It's good stuff. A lot of EU MPs seem to think that the job of government is to set new rules and keep saying: Hey, You. Stop It! Did you know that bananas are to be a certain length and degree of straightness to conform to EU standards? I think those tastey small ones (that are true to its natural state) are probably illegal!

Yet they seem to multiply like rabbits and spread like a virus, not only in Europe!
In Japan and Germany I believe the bureaucratic machinery to be some of the worst in the World! They would make laws and rules for the way the grass has to grow if they only could and I am sure they trying to find a way to do that as we speak!

A typical duck dish served at an upscale BeiJing restaurant after it has been sliced from the bird. When cooked correctly, the skin will be golden brown and crispy on the outside; This crust traps the juices for what should be very tender meat inside.

Taken in Beijing at a restaurant where I went with some colleagues. I am a vegetarian and I find the images of dead animals on a table grossly unappealing.

This photo was taken at one of the large Beijing restaurants that specialize in Peking duck. The ovens are in a large room behind glass so that patrons can see how the ducks are roasted.

Here in the Philippines, and in Asia, Peking Duck is one of the most delicious dishes served in various special occasions. The dish is delicately, carefully prepared and cooked, so as to satisfy the Cantonese chef's palates.

Very tasty, but probably not the healthiest food for you. However, I'm not sure I agree with banning it, or banning the ovens used to prepare it, which equates to the same thing: no oven, no duck.
