European Union tightens up on bluefin tuna fishing rules

The European Union introduced new rules to help restore stocks of endangered bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, meaning there will be significant cuts to fishing quotas by 2011 and the time fishermen are allowed to fish for the tuna will be shortened by four months.
Controls and inspections will be enhanced as well, and fishing allowances will be cut back to 2007-2008 levels. Any fish caught outside of the new quotas will be banned from imports or exports.
"The deal was reached after difficult negotiations" and agreed on by all 27 member nations, the EU's Czech presidency said in a statement, adding that it would ensure "the 2009 fishing season will be governed by new, stricter rules".
Robert DeNiro's restaurant Nobu in London was criticized recently for selling endangered bluefin tuna on its menu.

I really hope the rules are enforced because often times, these countries will just violate these rules through some loopholes.
