The “Excuse Me” Study - Cows and Farts by greenpays

Ever wonder what’s new on the Environmental front in Argentina? Well, Argentine researchers discovered that methane coming from cows makes up over 30% of their country’s total greenhouse emissions. That’s 55 million cows creating a whole lotta wind!! One cow produces anywhere from 8000 to 1,000 litres of methane.

So how does an Argentinian researcher understand the impact of the wind produced by cows on global warming? To get these figures, the scientists collected the gas from the cow’s stomachs in plastic tanks which were atttached to their backs.

I bet you’re wondering what’s next!! Scientists are now trying out new diets to improve the digestion of cows to reduce global warming. By feeding cows clover and alfalfa versus grain, moo-cow methane emmissions can be reduced by 25 % .
