Factory Farms Polluting the Environment, Public Health
There is another monstrosity of industrial agriculture, not quite as visible as monoculture fields of GMO crops, but perhaps equally as damaging to public health and the environment. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are just what the name implies, massive livestock production facilities characterized by extremely crowded living conditions and mechanized operations. Many of these factory farms contain tens of thousands of cattle or swine, and hundreds of thousands of chickens. While CAFO’s only account for about 5% of U.S. animal operations, they produce more than 50% of our food animals.
