The boycott is already beginning to bite, it seems.

Farmers claim UK, Jordan boycotting Israeli fruit

Fruit growers disappointed by cancelled orders from abroad, leaving produce to rot in warehouses

Fruit growers in Israel have reported delays and reductions in orders from abroad since the military operation in Gaza was launched, due to various boycotts against Israeli produce.

Farmers say much of their produce is being held in warehouses due to canceled orders, and fear a sharp decrease in fruit exports to countries such as Jordan, Britain, and the Scandinavian countries.

"We export persimmons, and because of the fighting a number of countries and distributors are canceling orders," Giora Almagor, of the southern town of Bitzaron, told Ynet. He said some of the produce had already been shipped while some was awaiting shipment in warehouses.

Almagor said a large number of cancellations came from Jordan. "The produce stays packed in warehouses, and this is causing us massive losses," he said.

"The longer the fruit waits in storage after sorting, the more its quality decreases. We also have to pay for cooling the merchandise that should have already left, and the cost in considerable," he added.

Ilan Eshel, director of the Organization of Fruit Growers in Israel, said Scandinavian countries have also been canceling orders. "It's mostly Sweden, Norway, and Denmark," he said. "In Scandinavia the tendency is general, and it may come to include all of the chains."

Eshel says the boycott did not exist before the Gaza offensive was launched. "It's getting worse, and more voices can be heard calling to boycott Israeli merchandise," he said.

Good to see the Boycott having an impact.

The Israeli "incursion" in Gaza has back-fired terribly.  It is a complete disaster and will probably create far greater support for Hamas from the relatives of the 1,200 people killed.  The irony about Hamas is that Israelis keep on about how Hamas say in their charter they want to destroy Israel but Hamas have never ratified that charter!  It was written by some unknown cleric who never really had much influence!  The demonstrations across the world against what Israel is doing should be a wake-up call, but this fighting is more about the political struggle between the politicians, manoeuvring to win in February!  It makes me feel so cynical!   Fighting with such over-whelming force is a terrible way to deal with ones opponents!  I will never buy Israeli fruit again:  I don't support at all what Israel has done to Gaza!

Well, it has not yet reached the voters in Israel since they do support this war to 90% still.

@ gerrypopplestone, Listening to commentary on Radio 4 and elsewhere I'm hearing statements that the war on Gaza has politicised people here in Britain. I think this is a continuation of popular feeling which started with the war on Iraq, and people's increasing awareness of the disconnect between the spin of the politicians and military spokespersons and the incredible brutality of the latest generations of weaponry marketed by the 'Defence' industry. The absolute failure of any timely and meaningful intervention by UN or whatever is evident too. In east London Israel's aggression and inhumanity is creating its own spill-out into our largely quiet and peaceful multicultural community. Something is going to have to 'change', there is that widespread expectation now.

@ Paschen, I wonder if those statistics of 90% popular support will change. Here a clear majority were behind the war on Iraq as initially sold to the public. Opinion has changed dramatically since.

Thanks for your comments.

(Heritage too, excellent graphic which I hope NP moderators will leave in place)
