Tests on whalemeat on sale in Japan have revealed astonishing levels of mercury. While it has long been known that the animals accumulate heavy metals such as mercury in their tissues, the levels discovered have surprised even the experts.

Two of the 26 liver samples examined contained over 1970 micrograms of mercury per gram of liver. That is nearly 5000 times the Japanese government’s limit for mercury contamination, 0.4 micrograms per gram.

At these concentrations, a 60-kilogram adult eating just 0.15 grams of liver would exceed the weekly mercury intake considered safe by the World Health Organization, say Tetsuya Endo, Koichi Haraguchi and Masakatsu Sakata at the University of Hokkaido, who carried out the research. "Acute intoxication could result from a single ingestion," they warn in a draft paper accepted for publication in The Science of the Total Environment.

The researchers call on the government to impose tighter regulations on the consumption of whale organs. In particular, they warn that pregnant women risk poisoning their unborn children. In the 1950s and early 1960s, hundreds of children around Japan’s Minamata Bay were born with horrific birth defects after their mothers ate seafood contaminated with mercury compounds, which had been poured raw into the bay since the 1930s. Thousands more suffered brain damage.
Single mouthful

Even veteran researchers from the Minamata saga were shocked by the new figures. "Hirokatsu Akagi, a director of the National Institute for Minamata Disease, was very surprised," says Endo. "He’d never seen levels above 20 micrograms per gram."

On average, concentrations of mercury in whale and dolphin livers were 370 micrograms per gram, 900 times the government limit. Average levels in kidneys and lungs were also high, about 100 times the limit. None of the samples was below the limit.

In work not yet published, Endo’s team has shown that rats suffered acute kidney poisoning after a single mouthful of the most highly contaminated liver. While levels were lower in muscle, Endo told New Scientist that on average it still contained 2.5 to 25 times the limit.

The samples came from small-toothed whales and dolphins, catches of which are not restricted by the International Whaling Commission, the international body that regulates whaling. Mercury becomes concentrated in their internal organs when they eat contaminated fish and squid.

Japan continues to campaign vigorously to be allowed to resume full-scale whaling of larger species. But an IWC meeting in May 2002 ended in deadlock.

Canadian scientists investigating the PCB content of breast milk among the women of industrial southern Quebec needed samples of milk from an unadulterated environment for reference purposes. They took the necessary samples from Inuit women in Arctic Canada. They were shocked when the results came back from the laboratory. The Arctic mothers had five times as much PCB in their milk as the women further south.46

The survey was carried out in the mid-1980s and was one of the first alarming signs that organic pollutants able to pose a threat to both humans and animals, were found in the seemingly pristine Arctic landscape, far from any sources of industrial pollution. Since then, a considerable amount of research has been done to map the presence of organic pollutants in the Arctic. The problem has comprised a central issue in the work carried out by the eight Arctic nations that recently formed the Arctic Council. One of the most significant results of this work to date is an 800-page report entitled The AMAP Assessment Report: Arctic Pollution Issues, published in 1997.

The report describes the systematic transport of Persistent Organic Pollutants, such as PCB, from warmer to colder areas by way of air currents. In effect, the Earth’s atmosphere functions like a giant oil refinery, separating different compounds at different latitudes, in accordance with the temperatures at which they condense. Heavy metals like mercury and cadmium are also transported polewards, in part by the ocean currents. The situation is made worse by the fact that organic pollutants decompose far more slowly in die Arctic environment than they do further south.

Organic pollutants filter into the food chain where they are dramatically concentrated as they progress from link to link. In this way, they pose a greater threat to species eating marine mammals than to the marine mammals themselves.

Organic pollutants bind themselves to fatty tissues and it is therefore those cultures that consume considerable amounts of seal or whale blubber that are the most vulnerable. This applies to most Inuit communities, particularly the smaller villages that still maintain hunting traditions, and where imported food is very expensive. It also applies to the Faroe Islanders. In the Faroes, the blubber of pilot whales constitutes an important part of the traditional diet. 75% of women in northern Quebec and Labrador and 95% of women in Greenland have a higher PCB level in their blood than «the level of concern» of 5 parts per million defined by the Canadian health authorities.47 Organic pollutants are transferred to infant through their mother’s milk. Surveys carried out in the US show that PCB can be harmful to the development of the central nervous system.

In the animal kingdom, the polar bear is vulnerable to organic pollutants as its diet consists primarily of seal. Very high levels of PCB have been found in the polar bears of the Svalbard region.

Whales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound capacity to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans.

Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The exhausted, terrified and confused whales are eventually driven into the shallows. Here the bloodbath begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed. The blood-stained bay is soon filled with horribly mutilated and dying whales.

The Faroese celebrate the butchery of their victims in an carnival atmosphere of entertainment. Indoctrinated from an early age, children are often given a day off school to watch the fun. They run down to the bay and clamber over the carcasses of slaughtered whales.

Every year around 2,000 whales are driven ashore and cruelly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands, mid-way between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. For centuries the Faroe Islanders have hunted pilot whales, driving entire schools into killing bays, where they are speared or gaffed from boats, dragged ashore and butchered with knives. Although the Islands are a protectorate of Denmark, they have their own Government and regulations governing the pilot whale hunt or "grind" as it is known.

Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.

The drive hunt is a practice abandoned elsewhere many decades ago, and now outlawed by other European states. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands have no subsistence need for whale meat, and much of the flesh is left to rot and be dumped; it cannot be exported, as it is polluted with heavy metals and other toxins and therefore cannot meet EU heath standards for human food.

According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).

Di immagini crude che documentino la ferocia e la barbarie di cui è capace l’uomo contro le altre specie viventi ne abbiamo diffuse molte: dal massacro delle foche che si perpetua ogni anno in Canada, alla strage degli elefanti in Africa, alla mattanza delle tigri appese come maiali a testa in giù per rifornire il mercato alimentare esotico dei cinesi ricchi.
Oggi vogliamo denunciare un’altra efferata e insensata usanza che si ripete annualmente nelle isole Far Oer, in Danimarca: l’uccisione di centinaia di balene, arpionate e accoltellate in massa da decine di persone, accorse come per un rito, a quello che per loro è un giorno di festa, per i poveri mammiferi un giorno rosso di sangue, un eccidio brutale ed inspiegabile.

L’uomo nasce cacciatore, diranno alcuni, ed è normale che si pratichi la pesca, che si vada a caccia e che si cibi di altre specie viventi. Fin qua ci siamo. Ma come insegnavano gli indiani d’America, i primi veri ecologisti, non bisogna prendere più del necessario da Madre Natura, rispettando ogni animale, ogni pianta come fosse sacra, perché necessaria alla nostra sopravvivenza.
Uccidere gli elefanti per farne bacchette d’avorio, assassinare le tigri per servirle ad un nababbo in camera con la sua amante, massacrare tenerissimi cuccioli di foca per ricavarne pellicce per signore facoltose non è lo stesso che uccidere un orso, come facevano anticamente gli indiani, per ricavarne un cappotto per ripararsi dal gelido inverno.
Così come c’è un’enorme differenza tra pescare per la sussistenza di una popolazione e compiere un massacro scellerato per perpetuare una stupida tradizione.
Così come è diversa la modalità con cui potrebbero essere soppressi questi poveri e stupendi animali marini, senza farne un giorno di festa, senza compiacersi e ridere alla vista delle balene sgozzate. Questo non è istinto di sopravvivenza, questa è crudeltà, pura, spietata, senza paragoni in nessun’altra specie vivente.
Le balene sono animali sensibili e socievoli e hanno, particolare non trascurabile, un sistema nervoso molto sviluppato che le porta a soffrire il dolore, il terrore e le sofferenze in maniera molto accentuata.
Ogni anno nelle Far Oer, i grossi mammiferi vengono attirati nelle baie, disorientando un intero gruppo con la cattura della balena pilota, vengono guidati e disorientati dai motoscafi (condotti solitamente da islandesi), costretti ad arenarsi sulla riva. Qui ha inizio il bagno di sangue. Martelli del peso di 2,2 chilogrammi percuotono ripetutamente gli animali ancora vivi, per far penetrare nella carne fresca uncini perforanti. Successivamente coltelli di 15 centimetri vengono impiegati per trapassare le carni e spaccare letteralmente la spina dorsale. La baia si riempie di sangue stagnante e di balene sofferenti e morenti tra i più atroci dolori. Il tanfo di morte è insopportabile
Gli abitanti delle Far Oer celebrano il massacro delle loro vittime in un’atmosfera carnevalesca di intrattenimento. Spesso ai più piccoli viene concesso un giorno di festa a scuola per assistere all’evento e godere dello spettacolo. Decine di bambini corrono sulla spiaggia, nella baia, e saltano e giocano e gioiscono sulle carcasse sanguinanti delle balene. Ogni anno trovano la morte nelle Far Oer circa 2.000 balene.

Le Far Oer, a metà strada tra le isole Shetland e l’Islanda, malgrado siano un protettorato della Danimarca, hanno un loro governo indipendente che regola anche questa stupida mattanza annuale.
Le balene del Nord Atlantico sono considerate una specie protetta dalla Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats.
Uccidendo anche più di cento balene per volta interi gruppi vengono disorientati, sconvolgendo gli equilibri, i cicli riproduttivi, dividendo intere famiglie e condannando a morte i piccoli della specie.
Gli abitanti delle Far Oer, dato ancora più sconcertante, non vivono del ricavato della vendita di carne di balena, perché non può essere esportata negli altri Paesi Europei, dal momento che viene ad essere inquinata da tossine e metalli pesanti e non è pertanto conforme agli standard dell’Unione sugli alimenti destinati al consumo umano.
La mattanza delle balene è dunque un atto totalmente gratuito, crudele e assurdo.
L’unica cosa che possiamo fare per fermare lo scempio è diffondere quanto più possibile questi dati e queste terribili immagini.
Pubblicatele sui vostri siti, sui blog, sugli spaces, inviatele via mail ai vostri amici. Se i network di informazione nazionali perdono pagine e servizi interi per intenerire con la storia di una balena che ha scambiato una barca per la mamma, cosa dovremmo fare con queste immagini, ben più terribili e scioccanti?
E’ necessario rendersi testimoni e diffondere questa vergogna, per arrivare a fermarla e a condannarla senza scusanti.
Mi auguro che queste immagini scuotano la sensibilità di più coscienze e che vorrete unirvi al nostro grido di protesta e di ferma condanna

Este infelizmente não é apenas um artigo de final de semana. Gostaria de estar aqui desejando meu habitual voto de um excelente final de semana a todos mas tenho que sair de minha zona de conforto. Não posso me omitir e desejo que este artigo arrecade muitos colaboradores que comigo vão lutar contra esta barbárie. Estava passeando pelo universo dos blogs quando, ao visitar o blog afamaran.zip.net/ me deparei com esta imagem que me embrulhou o estômago:

Causou-me profunda revolta ver que um país "dito" culto e de primeiro mundo como a Dinamarca, comemore o rito de passagem de seus jovens para a vida adulta levando ao sofrimento e à morte animais tão indefesos como as baleias e os golfinhos. Como pode existir gente tão cruel? E eles consideram-se civilizados? Estão virando homens? Isto para mim é um retrocesso na cultura...

É uma extrema falta de respeito assitirmos em pleno século XXI, século este em que as lutas ecológicas e as tentativas de conscientização para a preservação de nosso ecossistema cresceram substancialmente, a ritos tão primitivos e que nos levam a ver que a humanidade não está em progresso e sim em retrocesso assistindo a isto calado.

Não me conformando, pesquisei mais fontes que me informassem desta barbárie. Visitando o blog Preserve do Alexandre, tomei conhecimento que as crianças são dispensadas das aulas escolares para assistirem e acharem bonito este rito de brutalidade e crueldade! Onde nós estamos? Como queremos viver em um mundo de paz se a todo momento assistimos cenas como estas? Chocantes! Estou indignada... Sinto vergonha de saber que "idiotas" (desculpem o termo) como estes fazem parte da mesma civilização humana da qual eu também sou pertecente. Nos dois blogs encontrei um link que nos leva a assinar uma petição contra esta revoltante prática de chacina das baleias e golfinhos. Lá você poderá ter detalhes sobre este absurdo. Todo ano é a mesma coisa, mais de mil baleias são cruelmente mortas com a bênção do governo do Japão que alega “fins científicos”.

Segundo o Centro de Pesquisa Japonesa, empresa da Gallup International Association, 71% da população japonesa é contra a caça de baleias em águas internacionais. Essa pesquisa foi encomendada pelo Greenpeace.

Outro dado importante: 87% dos pesquisados declarou não saber que parte dos impostos cobrados no Japão subsidia a atividade baleeira. Atualmente o governo financia a caça de baleias com cerca de 500 milhões de yens (cerca de US$ 5 milhões) por ano!

E na Dinamarca, país mais que desenvolvido, também acontece este absurdo, tanto que as imagens que ilustram este post foram feitas lá.

Só me resta perguntar: quem é o animal irracional, mesmo?

Recebi estas imagens por email e fiquei chocada. Não sabia que isto se passava nas Ilhas Faroé, Dinamarca. Pelo que percebi, ao pesquisar sobre o assunto, cerca de 4000 baleias e golfinhos foram mortos num só ano.
No entanto, a Dinamarca está agora a sofrer pressões enormes tanto da União Europeia, que ameça deixar de enviar fundos, como também de empresas, principalmente alemãs, que deixaram de lhes comprar peixe por sentirem a retracção dos compradores a produtos originários desse país.

At the Greenland Nights culture festival, Flateyri, northwest Iceland, a seal was killed - as food often is - and eaten.

Tasted somewhere between whale and beef. Recommended as a gentle introduction to marine mammals. (Beware, in some cultures and religions, seal is haram.)

Notice the girl wielding the ulu - the traditional woman's knife. And that they are dressed their finest - lots of white included - while doing this bloody work.

I did not shoot it (but thanks for the metaphorical compliment). My hunting career ended before I ever aimed the shotgun at anything living, because the declining guillemot stock in Oslofjorden needed protection. And I still remember the feeling of cutting raw meat for the first time, after moving out from my parents: It felt like I was sinking the knife into my own tigh muscle.

bamzin & Stacina: Yours are normal urban reactions. (I was close to writing 'natural reactions'.) While I do eat this, I also share a bit of that feeling. If my photo helps you keep the vegetarian faith, I'm quite happy with that. I see many good reasons to not eat meat.

What I can't quite understand, is the meat-eaters who object morally to wild marine mammalian meat, while still eating industrial poultry.

Yeah. 'eskimo' is supposedly a Native American negative term for Inuit, meaning 'eater of raw meat'.

But I'm no expert on Greenland cuisine. In this case, it was barbequed and served with curry and onion in hamburger style, a.k.a. the Big MacSeal. Adaptive culture, the Inuit. Seriously, they are very technologically adaptive, that's how they have survived in the ice. E.g.: when they got steel tools, they could make the joints stiffer, and reduced the number of ribs in the kayak design. The Norse, arriving in Greenland at about the same time, did not survive in the long term. I have a Jareed Diamond book in the mail from Amazon about that. Sadly, the Inuit are less adaptive to social change, the urbanization of Greenland has hit them hard.

What do you mean by 'raw'? Do you think of dried or smoked meat as 'raw'?

(sorry it won't let me send any more messages) It's an upcoming film produced by Wendy Walker, a famous Native Canadian (of Cree heritage) and she is close to completing the film which is funded by a grant. We are looking for up to 1600 photos which cover the different native tribes. Your picture would be perfect when describing Inuit in Greenland, and compares to other Inuit tribes in Alaska and Canada.

Denmark position inside the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has changed many times in the past years. Mostly of its population opposes whaling and it has supported many positive initiatives to protect whales, but recently it changed again its position becoming a strong pro-whaling country, mostly due to the pressure of Greenland and the Faroe island.

Japanese Government invited Denmark, as many other Governments, to a meeting this February to discuss the future of the Whaling Industry. The clear intent is to create an illusion of widespread support for an end to the moratorium on commercial whaling by the IWC.

Today Greenpeace launched a petition asking Denmark not to go to this meeting.
It's possible to sign the petition here.

So far 11,754 people have sent this message.

The Faroes "Bay Of Blood" are a group of about 30 islandslocated in the North Atlantic Ocean, situated halfway between Icelandand Scotland. They fall under the crown of Denmark, but aresemi-independent. The population is about 46,000, and they inhabitabout half of the islands.

The Faroes economy relies only on economic fishing, but that doesn’t give them the right to slaughter 544 Atlantic white sided dolphins in a single day, like they did in 1988.

recently, studies have shown that the meat and blubber of pilot whales contain high amounts of mercury, PCBs, DDT and dieldrin.
