First Day of Spring 2010: Vernal Equinox Traditions to Celebrate
Saturday March 20th is the First Day of Spring for 2010 and as the Vernal Equinox is Welcomed by Many, Here are Some Traditions to Celebrate the Changing Season
As the Spring Equinox begins at 17:32 Coordinated Universal time (UTC) on Saturday March 20th there are a number of ways that you can welcome Spring to make sure that your season is a good one.
Spring is a time of rebirth, when things start to grow again and for those in the Northern Hemisphere it is a time when the world starts to warm up and one can feel the kiss of summer in the air.
One way to celebrate the Vernal Equinox is to use eggs, as eggs are supposed to represent rebirth and a new potential. There is even a rumor that on the day of the Spring Equinox eggs will easily balance on their end. Some people also color their eggs or give them as gifts to those whom they want to prosper in the coming season.
Another symbol of new life, and also a tradition to celebrate spring is using seeds to grow and nurture something from 'birth.'
An ancient custom involves the planting of seeds in baskets, then when the seeds sprout, the greens are tied with red ribbons and placed on the graves of the dead, symbolizing life conquering death.
A more radical tradition is the burning of socks. According to the Christian Science Monitor, when the Vernal Equinox happens those who are used to yachting throughout the year no longer wear shoes and socks. As it is colder during the winter it is acceptable to protect your ankles from the cold, but in the mid 1980s, the manager of the Annapolis Yacht Yard Bob Turner, took off his socks on the Spring Equinox and burned them because they were full of debris from the boat.
The Annapolis Maritime Museum now celebrates the tradition every year and the tradition has grown over the years.
In Bulgaria and Romania they welcome Spring by exchanging ornaments composed of red and white threads.
Called mărţişor in Romanian and martenitsa in Bulgarian, they are figurines to be pinned to the chest, bracelets or worn around the neck.
Of course you can also just do some good old fashioned spring cleaning and start your new season with a clean and tidy house.
Happy First Day of Spring 2010!
