"They were deported via Sukarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta yesterday (Tuesday)," he told AFP.

The three -- Shibu Nair from India, Gigie Cruz from the Philippines and Neil Tangri from the United States -- held tourist visas and these had been violated when they attended the protest, Kusdaryanto added.

The group were members of the Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA) and had been on their way to speak at a civil society forum at a major UN climate change summit on Indonesia's Bali, said Manny Calonzo, GAIA co-cordinator.

"We thought it was totally unjust to the team," he told AFP by telephone from Manila, where GAIA is based.
