The July Critical Mass in Vancouver was generally a peaceful and quiet ride on a sweltering hot day, with about 1000 riders.
The CBC gave a factual report at the Art Gallery estimating 500 people.
Global TV scanned the crowd showing alcohol and drug use, exaggerating the numbers to 2000, suggesting the crowd was unpredictable.

I was thinking of having my own protest of sorts, and announcing a big Gas Guzzling SUV protest the same day to ride with these Assbandits, See how they would like it having a hundred SUVS all around them. Course I draw the line at driving naked like some cyclists do, cause I do not want to be responsible for people getting their Retinas scraped after seeing me naked, unless they were cyclists.

One thousand cyclists. That's a lot. Are cycling facilities so poor in Vancouver, that so many cyclists have to protest? We have about 500 cyclists in London on our CMs and our facilities are poor too, but clearly Vancouver must have diabolical facilities for so many to take to the roads. What is the Mayor of Vancouver doing for cyclists?
Barry, I think you should join CM for journalistic purposes. You may even enjoy it, in fact, you may even Love It. One Big Party on Wheels. Better than being a party pooper all alone in a SUV.

It says alcohol and drug use in the post but that's the sort of thing motorists get up to all the time, and they're driving a lethal weapon. Not all CM do booze and alcohol. Boris, our Mayor, in London, isn't a Critical Masser but he drinks and cycles and he is a Right Wing cyclist. Perhaps these types are a bad influence on CMrs.

It is better to be on a bike that in a car on a sweltering hot day. I would hate to be on a car when it gets so hot.

Ya, it really sucks when it is hot out and I have to drive my truck. It's like, an awsome 90+ degrees out and when I roll up all the windows and crank up the AC it is an insufferable 65 degrees in the Land Rover. I hate that! The whole time I am swearing and praying that my SUV would run out of gas so I can take my mountain bike off the rack and peddle the rest of the way to my destination! There is nothing I enjoy more than getting to a lunch or business meeting all soaking wet and covered in sweat, LOL!!!!!!!! Beaulieu, you are a real comedian!

Being in a truck/car on a sweltering hot day is like being in some microwave. Then made even worse by being in traffic jam, sometimes with no food and water. Phew! I don't think I could handle it. I am too much of a fresh air fiend.
I think definitely there ought to be nice places for people to cool down by having a shower. Some work places do have them but it is slow process.

Vancouver has some amazing scenery. People miss out on so much when they drive. I love the special air of Vancouver.

Is the article saying there a 1000 drug and alcohol users? No doubt there must have been piles of syringes and bottles everywhere or was it about three, ie a minority?
Facts please.
