A Giant Freshwater Stingray, weighing 771 lbs was caught in Thailand yesterday and is easily the 'largest freshwater fish ever caught'. It is also pregnant.

Catching the giant stingray was an ordeal that last over 90 minutes but Ian Welch felt it was well worth it. At 7ft long and 7ft wide with a 10ft tail, the giant stringray needed 13 men to lift it from the water.

Welch commented "As a lifelong angler and biologist it is great my passions have come together."

It was captured by a team of scientists that were on a tagging expedition. They hauled it on to the boat and to shore to tag it, then they released it back into the wild, so hopefully it can have more giant stingray babies.

The monster Giant freshwater stingray was caught by the Fishsiam Ltd team in Thailand. The fish was caught during an expedition to the Maeklong and Ban Pakong Rivers in Thailand with Dr.Zeb Hogan from the National Geographic society in addition to Thai veterinary experts. Fishsiam Ltd is engaged in a research program concerning Giant freshwater stingray which has official approval from the Thai authorities. We are working closely with Dr.Hogan and other scientists to study these prehistoric predators. All fish caught by the team are released unharmed after capture.
