On Monday November 1, Residents of Schmalkalden in Germany Were Shocked When a Giant Sinkhole Opened Up in Their Town

According to CNN, which quotes the local newspaper Thueringer-Allgemeine, the sinkhole is about 65-feet-deep and measures over 130 feet across. It swallowed a car and forced the evacuation of about 25 people in nine houses.

Workers are starting the repairs today, but it is estimated that it will take about 1,000 truckloads of gravel to fill the hole.

Jürgen Reinholz, environment and agriculture minister for the state of Thuringia, said natural causes were suspected, according to Spiegel Online International.
