Global Warming Blogger Calls for Polar Cities for Future Survival of Humankind

This is my "idea" for future polar cities to house potential survivors of global warming in year 2500 or yea 3500, far far away. I wonder if you think this idea is worthwhile, in terms of making people THINK about global warming and that if we don't take steps now to stop the Co2 emissions, the planet and we humans will be in big trouble, 500 years from now.

Maybe.

My idea is a kind of Swiftian ''modest proposal'' to make people think and take action now.

I hope we never need polar cities.....just food for thought. When you read my blog, please tell me what you think of my outlandish idea. Are polar cities feasible? Where should they be located? Murmasnk? Anchorage? Barrow? Resolute? Ellesmere Island?

I have contacted Sir Richard Branson about perhaps funding a model polar city now, to show the world what they might look like, if we need them 500 years or so down the road...

Some of the responses to this story have been:

1.    "That’s interesting ! I read somewhere that by genetic engineering they are trying to harvest produce that can withstand extreme temp like when nuclear winter in future....your thought is somewhat related to that..its good. But whatever we do mother nature should not be altered...we need to somehow convey people that its high time come out of this mundane material world and try to change our lifestyle and restore the balance....we need to convey to people that adopting a moderation in spirituality and materialsm in their lives we could restore the balance of nature. Right now we are more inclined towards materialism which Is disturbing the planet earth.  I think spirituality is the basis of planet earth. So if somehow we can convey this its better..."

2.  ..."....it's an interesting idea. I've added your blog url to my blog in UK...."

3.    "Sadly I don't know anyone in the British or USA media who could publish your idea about polar cities. My cousin used to be a freelance investigative journalist for Panorama but sadly he no longer holds that position. I wish you the best of luck, ......if only to get people thinking of alternative solutions to global warming..."

ScienceDave, good post and explanation. I think Lovelock, at his advanced age, knowing he does not have long to live, maybe 10 more years, God bless him, is trying to use his name and connections to help people THINK more about global warming, and how we might all take an active part in changing the way we live. I think he was just floating this idea, via the 300 word letter to Nature, with a good PR outreach as well, to get more people THINKING about alternative ways to fight global warming. So at the end of the day, Lovelock did a public service and the idea, while maybe not workable -- i.e., don't mess with Nature, is what many people are saying in reaction -- nevertheless gets people around the world THINKING and maybe some scientist in who knows where read the news story and currently working a novel idea to help stop global warming. So good on James Lovelock.

By the way, ScienceDave, have you ever considered another brilliant idea, to create POLAR CITIES to house future survivors of a catastrophic climate change, if it ever comes to that? I created a blog and am devoting the rest of my life to promoting the idea of planning, designing and building model polar ciites, now, to get ready for what might come in year 2500 or year 3500 or so. I know it sounds farfetched, but many good ideas start with a ridiculous concept.....at first. Have you ever considered POLAR CITIES for the future of humankind, and have you ever written about them? I would love to be interviewed by you here for a story for this site. Email me at danbloom gmail
