Global warming is NOT man made. It is simply a cycle that has been going on year after year for millions of years. There is no reason to change our way of life. It will blow over once the world's cycle changes. If water levels rise, it will only be a foot and it will no cause any damage to sea facing countries. Let me explain how this all happened.

Over the holidays I had a big argument with my 74 year old uncle who said and argued the above and did it very well. He said that global warming is a hoax, not man made and it’s all blown out of proportion. I don't agree with him at all but my uncle is a smart man, extremely wealthy and worked hard all his life. He is very well respected in the community so I listened to him growing up but he is not right about everything. As you can understand it's hard to argue with a man of this power.

After arguing over and over again I finally gave up on the old man and decided to let it rest. It still didn’t’ sit well with me. How can he sit here with his grand children and argue global warming is a hoax? I told him to research his arguments and come back to me with convincing arguments and then we will have it out. :)
He did and sent me this article - Click here.

This is my reply to his email. (My uncle still argued global warming wasn’t caused by man.

-----Email start---

That is a great article and I have read about Bjorn many times. I have even read his book - Cool it. Great book!  Bjorn is also very well known as a skeptical environmentalist like most people are including you my dear uncle.  Bjorn is no doubt a great influencer. In fact he was named on of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2004 and one of the "50 people who could save the planet" by the UK Guardian in 2008. He has also written several articles posted by Wall Street Journal and in the NY Times. (http://www.lomborg.com/faq/)

Enough about his credentials - he's got em!

The argument you had was: "global warming isn't caused by man". The article you just sent to me contradicts your statement about what the cause was; man made or not?  This article is based on Bjorn's book Cool It! where he says on page 8 and I quote:  "global warming is real and man-made. It will have a serious impact on humans and the environment toward the end of this century".

He also says the solution to global warming is and I quote: "focus on the smartest solutions to the problems that the world faces, whether we're dealing with climate change, communicable diseases, malnutrition, agricultural subsidies, or anything else".

So, this article addresses that global warming is in fact a real man made problem and you can't deny that. Neither can we deny that the world has many other problems as well. So where do we begin? What do we fix first? I don't know the answer to that but if everyone helps by doing his or her little part then eventually we can create a better world. One man can't do much and likewise with an ant hill. It isn't built by one ant - ant hills are built by millions of helper ants.

Only together and united can we address the problems in this world. Maybe not in our lifetime, but we have a responsibility to our children and so forth. Raising awareness about problems is easy; to change the views of the world is much harder.

---- email end---

I don’t know how this email will be received by him but I’ll let you know ASAP.

"Global warming is a hoax".   My Uncle's Response to my email:

Hi Chris;
I agree that there is a lot of earth warming that can be attributed to man, but tell me why Mars and Jupiter are warming also and what caused all the other warming periods in history long before ther was any industrial activity and the populations were small.
----
Wow... He agrees with me but manages to sneak in a "but".    I don't know what to say... I mean how @!#%#$#! can a man be so stubborn? during the time I have written this far, I have received 3 emails that now contradicts his 1st article he sent me. WTF...

Chris

Your uncle has proved only one thing he is more
intelligent than you are.

Allow these people who should know, help you understand the situation.

In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming,
water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill …All these
dangers are caused by human intervention and it is only through changed
attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome.

The real enemy, then, is humanity itself

Global warming was chosen as the vehicle to further the Un agenda, and that agenda has nothing to do with golbal warming.

You have been had. Listen to your uncle. Age has it's upside,he has history to guide him. You have propaganda.

Ron "Atom Cat". You are now making classic errors when arguing. There are lots of fallacies in your post, they are not referenced and you are attacking me personally by undermining my intelligence.

Seriously, you have to be able to argue the points you are making. Don't write a comment for the sake of writing, put some thought into it because I am interested in hearing what you have to say but use the proper arguing techniques.

Cheers!

Agreed Moonwolf. " Debate" is the proper word. Thanks for the link :)

Chris, appologies for the intelligence quip.

"Thanks... so what do I do now? I really want to take him down".

Doesn't sound like something an open minded person would say.

Only your point of view seems to count on this subject.

Freedom of the press, thought and ideas.

You may want to call your uncle and appologize to him.

This is a great ongoing story. For my own part, I think it's unrealistic to believe that all of our combined emissions have not affected the course of the planet's climate: arguing over percentage points is a waste of time and distracts us from the real issue: how do we adapt in order to prevent our societies from reaching unplanned obsolescence?

Atomcat - I agree with you about "take him down". It was meant to be more of a funny statement rather than litterally.

When he sat around the dinner table and argued his points, he's grand children sat there with big eyes and listened and soaked in every word he said.

Imagine kids from 5 years old up to 15 admiring this man who refuses to say: "Chris, I admit I might be wrong". Furthermore of this story that maybe I should have written is, one of his grand daughters said: I agree with you grandpa! Global warming is crap. (something along those words)

Is that the proper way for a role model to behave and influence his future family? I dont' think that is right because they grow up thinking that way instead of embracing freedom of press, thoughts and ideas.

Imagine for a second that there are 10 of my uncles out there saying the same thing to 5 grand kids. That is 50 little kids. They in turn tell their friends and grow up with this attitude.

Now, we are all allowed to have different opinions and thoughts, but I beleive we should all form our own opinions and embrace other thoughts and foremost; ADMIT we can in fact be wrong.

My uncle can believe it is a hoax, but my issue is he refuses to admit there are other opinions on it and he "brainwashes" his grand children. Let them think for themselves right?

Excellent movie you sent Moonwolf. I forwarded that.

Cheers

"Global Warming is a Hoax..." To add to Jordan's point - how do we adapt? How do we move forward? What can one man/woman do?

Stoffe, there is nothing to do. Global Warming thanks to Al Gore and the wackos has become a political, religious business. Now it is about money and control. They want to tell you what to drive what to eat. In California they want to regulate your thermostat. they say the debate is over and insult you if you disagree. The backlash will be big when the truth is learned. The world is in more danger from a future asteriod than the effects of Global Warming which will be 100 years or more from now.

Global warming is not our own personal responsibility? So is the answer to give up and let "THEM" decide our future?  mPress: There HAS to be something we can do?  I try to do the little things in my own realm not just recycling.

I refuse to panic and start worrying that we are doomed because Al Gore and paid science says so.I also will not feel guilty about my lifestyle, Al Gore sure doesn't. Whoever wants to live the rest of their lives worried about things they truly have no control over is up to them. I will not drink the koolaid..

Chris, I see you live in Victoria, say hi, I used to live there.

Let me start by saying, I have been an evironmentalist my entire life. I remember when I was a kid growing up in the Ottawa Valley. Until I was about 12, I'm 53 now, I never had a second thought about drinking from a clear stream. Farmers, about that time, started spraying the farm fields with pestisides, it wasn't long after that I knew it was unsafe to drink the water. Water is poison, food is poison and the air is poison. All this pollution was created by big business, sanctioned by govt.

Look at the Tar Sands, massive pollution. Govt. sanctioned. Cap and Trade is set up to help big business and punish you and I. If the public did everything they could to help the environment, which I do, we would have little impact. I can drive less, I can turn lights out, which I do.

In order to have a real impact we must become non-consumers. The downside to that is massive unemployment.

Canada has no chance of having any impact on world pollution levels. Ont. has less than 13 million people. France Germany and the UK have a combined population of 210 million and fit into Ont. with lots of room left over.  If you get a chance, read a Cloak of Green by Elaine Dewar

Anyway, is your uncle "brainwahing the children", or was it you that was brainwashed by the school system and the media.

My nephew who is 11 told me that some kids in his class are so afraid that "global warming" is going to kill them, they can't sleep and are suffering from nightmares.

I will leave you with this last thought. I have always been an environmentalist but I will never be a "GREEN"

I do understand and apprecitate your concern for the panet. In order to get a well rounded understanding, you need to study with an open, critical mind all sides and nuances of the subject.

I thank my grade seven teacher for that advice.

Take care

stoffe, I like this story. It's good stuff and with a personal twist.

It's good to hear both sides of this complex issue. Personally, I think we have a combination of factors. Yes, we affect the environment (hey, just look at the trash dumped by roads; the plastic rings that wind up killing wildlife as one small example), of course we do. But the earth's cycles, and sun cycles are all a complicated dance that's been going on for eons.

What I don't like is the cult-like "Gorista" viewpoint that personally attacks others, tries to portray those with different ideas as "deniers" like Holocaust deniers. That's overkill, and detracts from the message of personal responsibility in all we do in favor of political puffery and demagoguery.

Thanks for presenting such discussion-facilitating original material, and without attacking others here. P.S. though, I can't resist: remember he's your elder, so according to my culture, he deserves respect, even while disagreeing with him. A goal like "I really want to take him down" kinda rubs against my grain, culturally speaking. You probably won't convince him, but the quality of the discussion is a worthwhile journey with someone you love, no destination (i.e. decision of who's totally right/wrong) required.
