Goodbye, Dinosaurs: Energy planning in the 21st Century
This week, we're looking at old energy: coal-fired power plants, nuclear power and a centralized distribution system. Mark and Krystyn examine some new concepts being developed in Canada, and talk with Long Island Soundkeeper Terry Backer about the move to a carbon-free society.

Wind power plants - ugly destruction of landscapes or adding interest? This is a controversial discussion in the Black Forest, Germany, despite all knowledge about the environmental benefits of renewable energies. The photo of the wind plant raising above the clouds over the forest was seen from the city of Freiburg. The dynamics of the changing clouds moving around the slowly turning rotors of the wind power plant was aesthetically fascinating. For me an enhancement of an otherwise boring view at a dark, grey winter day.

Heavy industry is ugly when they attempt to hide it. Paint it bright colors and make it stand out like you mean it!

One of many photos that I've taken over the last year of coal fired power stations in the north of England.

The decades-old Denver area Cherokee coal-fired power plant complex (opened in phases 1957-1968) is visible from all the major area highways (in the the area between I-76, I-270/US36, I-25/US87, and I-70/US6/US85) but also from downtown Denver, as in the coal train photos.
There's increasing awareness of this power plant's environmental impacts on the area, and pressure by Denver/Boulder activist groups to phase it out in favour of clean, green power, like CSP, and serious energy conservation.
