As many people know in 1991 I began to try to stop the release of garbage leachate on to the streets and lanes of Vancouver. Gordon Campbell was the Mayor of Vancouver at that time and I ensured the Mayor and Council understood that compactor garbage trucks were continually compacting their loads and releasing garbage leachate along their routes as they travelled through Vancouver  communities. Garbage leachate in landfills is very carefully contained however the release of garbage leachate from compactor garbage trucks has been allowed to continue since I began my work. The added link is for a flickr collection titled 'We've Been Poisoned - 1991 to 2003 Documentation'.

If you click the link you can see the letter I received from Mayor Campbell, September 9, 1991. I have also added this letter as a photo in this story.

If you go to February 14, 2001 in this flickr collection you will be able to read what Gordon Campbell had to say as the Liberal Leader of the Opposition. I have also included this letter as a photo in this story.

If you go to March 6, 2002 on the flickr site, you will be able to read what Gordon Campbell had to say as the Premier of B.C. I have also included this letter as a photo in this story.

Gordon Campbell's inaction is killing us and the environment we live in! So you can visibly see what I am talking about when I say that he has allowed us to continue to be poisoned I am sending a link to a film I have created that will show how compactor garbage trucks are releasing garbage leachate all over our communities. Gordon Campbell and his government have not corrected this environmental health issue and because of this we have all continued to be poisoned.

When Gordon Campbell talks about how he addresses environmental issues remember this film.

This film makes the issue most visible from about half way through. These trucks have been used on the North American Continent since 1938 but Gordon Campbell has been in a position to ensure this release of garbage leachate on to the streets and lanes of Vancouver communities, is stopped, since he was the Mayor of Vancouver in 1991. The remaining years Gordon Campbell has been in government, he has never addressed this issue in an attempt to stop it from occurring. Since becoming Premier of British Columbia Gordon Campbell has not ensured the release of garbage leachate on to British Columbia streets and lanes where it drains into the ground water or sewers that drain directly into our waterways,  is stopped. Allowing this release of garbage leachate to continue to occur makes Premier Gordon Campbell #1 enemy of a healthy environment and all that live in it. As one of the leading people in two levels of government he is responsible for ensuring the release of garbage leachate all over our communities is stopped. For much of the past 18 years Gordon Campbell has chosen to allow us all to be poisoned instead of ensuring the practice of releasing the garbage leachate from compactor garbage trucks is stopped. The bacteria and virus combinations, The moulds, the fungi, the parasites and the combinations of chemicals that were never meant to be combined create one very serious problem in our landfills. The issue of the contents of garbage leachate is even more critical when our families and our pets are left to walk, ride, drive, and play in it. Mixed with rain, leachate sloshes and sprays all over everyone and everything before draining into our waterways. When left to dry the leachate mixes with the other fine particulate matter that is in the smoggy air we all breath, causing serious health ramifications. One more aspect of this issue cannot be left unsaid. Many chemical combinations, when mixed together, create spontaneous chemical combustion because they are not supposed to be combined. Then in the smoggy air we have sunshine heating things up even more. I call this adding to Global Warming in a very big way.

I have always wondered what you call that awsome smelling soup that leaks out of those trucks.  What is the solution you propose to end this problem?

I can only comment on how we go about stopping the continued release of garbage leachate on to the streets and lanes of Canadian cities and towns. A few years ago we acquired a fleet of a new style of garbage truck. Many Vancouver citizens had to acquire new leakproof garbage collection bins. These automated trucks contain the fluids within the trucks. The problem is that these trucks only collect from private residences. The companies that use the leaky compactor garbage trucks and the large hopper bins still continue to be used. These leaky trucks are used in the warehouse districts, business districts, commercial districts, hospitals, schools, restaurants and all apartment buildings and stores and all of the streets and lanes of our cities communities as they travel their routes. There should be no private haulers. Only the newer type of garbage removal trucks should be used and if a driver decides it is more cost effective to release the fluids from his truck on to the streets and lanes the fine should be so high that none of them would even consider that option.

As for the garbage leachate that has been spread all over the streets and lanes of North American cities and towns since 1938 we really do have to find out what has been done to the health of our environment, land and marine.  We need to do the research necessary to begin to correct this issue to the best of our abilities and we need to do this as quickly as possible.
