The "golden hour" rock formation was photographed on May 20, 2008 just outside Prescott Arizona in a place called Granite Dells. The area reminded me a lot of Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. Unlike Garden of the Gods though, Granite Dells is riddled with homes and criss-crossed with power lines, with little respect of the beautiful terrain. It's very difficult to avoid the clutter of the homes and power lines for a shot like this.
Photo 2 was taken on May 24 in Petrified Forest National Park. Thankfully, many years ago, people worked to establish the park as, before then, the petrified wood was disappearing at an alarming rate -- taken to make souvenirs.
