Greenpeace Activists Arrested at Kelowna Costco

Costco Kelowna was the target of Greenpeace demonstrators yesterday. During the demonstration, three activists were arrested. This action was taken to underline the fact that Costco is selling Redlist species -- seafood endangered by overfishing.

By 3 p.m., store management decided to ask the protesters to leave once more; police were called in once again, and the protesters were arrested after refusing to leave.

Const. Steve Holmes confirmed it was a peaceful protest and neither of the two detained would be charged.

“We want Costco to stop selling red list fish and begin implementing policies that promote the sale of sustainable seafood,” Delisle said in statements sent out to media.

Outside, six more activists—including two in fish costumes:

talked with customers,

passed out pamphlets,

set up a 10-foot tuna skeleton replica, and

raised two banners reading
-“Costco: Wholesale Ocean Destruction”
-“Don’t Buy, Don’t Sell Redlist Fish.”

Greenpeace Oceans Campaigner Sarah King also presented a Costco manager with the new Greenpeace report, Out of Stock, Out of Excuses: Ranking retailers on seafood sustainability.
