Clothing giant H&M has been using organic cotton in their clothes since 2004, but this year the company plans to use 50 percent more organic cotton than they did last year.

Last year they used about 3,000 tonnes of the material, which means this year they are hoping to use 4,500 tonnes. This will start with the spring line, where organic cotton will be used in men's, women's, and children's clothes and anything with organic cotton will be labeled as such.

H&M took its first tentative steps into using organic cotton in 2004, using 5 tonnes (11,000 pounds) in children's clothes, an amount that represented about 5 percent of the material in the clothes. The items were not labeled as containing organic cotton.

In the following years H&M used 50 tonnes (110,000 pounds) in 2005, 30 tonnes (66,000 pounds) in 2006 and about 160 tonnes (350,000 pounds) in 2007, when the company started to release items made of 100 percent organic cotton and some items that were a 50-50 blend of organic and conventional cotton. That number took a huge jump in 2008 when H&M used 3,000 tonnes of organic cotton.

All the organic cotton will be certified by the Control Union World Group.

Good, I have not seen them in Japan though. I think we do not have H&M.

Paschen, actually there is!

I went to the one in Harajuku and there's the other one in Tokyo :)
The line was sooooooooooooo long and the place was SO crowded!

You should check it out sometimes!

Well, Ivy, I will look since I am in Tokyo every week. Mind you I never really go shopping either and stay away from over crowded areas unless it is a warranted. My wife must know and I shall ask her.

Both H&M stores in Tokyo are fairly new, with the Harajuku location opened just months ago.

Thank you Terri, I started to worry about my sense of observation and memory as well. :)
