Levee Fails Near Hamburg, Iowa

Hamburg, Iowa is under a flash flood warning after a levee along the Missouri River failed.

Floodwaters are expected to swamp Highway 29, as well as farmland on either side of it.

Hamburg itself, with a population of around 1,100 people, is protected by recently-built secondary levees, but it's not clear if those are expected to hold. Hamburg is already partially evacuated.

The primary levee was compromised in several spots, and finally gave way; there's a 30-foot-wide hole though which floodwater is pouring.
