A tsunami warning has been issued for the state of Hawaii after a huge 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Japan.

Hawaii Braces for Tsunami

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning: "A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the agency said. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

When Could the Tsunami Hit Hawaii?

Officials state that the earliest that the tsunami might hit Hawaii is 2:59 am local time.

There are no estimates of the size of waves that could hit Hawaii.
