Promiscuous fish ?

Something strange is going on in England as scores of Koi come down with the Herpes virus.

The virus is similar to other forms of herpes

Is this a case of rampant sex in fish? or something far greater?

60 of the fish died at one of Britain's most prestigious royal gardens.

Far beyond the normal realm of the Human version of the STD

it could be disastrous for Koi owners...... Once a fish is infected, experts say killing every other fish in the pond is the only way to stop the virus spreading.

If we had done this in humans the free loving 60's and 70's would have never come to an end.

ed (it) spreads through contact. A fish that comes into contact with water in which an infected fish has been swimming is susceptible to the virus, which has no cure.

Does this mean humans should worry about their next swim?

"There are no implications for human health regarding the KHV disease and it only affects fish of the carp variety,"

I know that these Koi are not affrcted by the virus. They all very healthy fish . The contribution of images to the article is merely to deonstrate what a healthy Koi Carp looks like. Gilli McGrouther photgrapher and owner of several  the images.

this comment seems disjointed and does not seem to  fit here in the article?

Thanks for requesting my photo to be included in your story. I photographed these beautiful Koi in The Self Realization Fellowship Meditation Garden in Southern California. These fish were very healthy and well cared for.

I don't know much about this story. Is this a new phenomenon for koi to be susceptable to the herpes virus? Also, Since herpes is not life threatening in humans, is that also true for fish? Are the koi actually dying from this? It seems like a very drastic measure to be killing koi to prevent the spread of the disease.

This was taken at a Chinese garden in Chinatown, Vancouver, BC. At first we thought this fish was dead because it was sitting very still under some debree in the middle of pond for several minutes. We were discussing whether we should throw something near it to see if it would move and then all of the sudden it swam over to us (probably thought we were going to feed it). We decided that it was a magical koi fish!

Thanks for requesting the use of my picture for your story. This picture of Koi was taken in a Memorial Garden in Portchester UK. They all looked very healthy and well cared for.

They were all very active and one I thought was going to jump out of the pond. I'm sure it thought I had some food.

These lovely creatures live in a man-made water feature at Sunken Gardens in Saint Petersburg, FL. where I learned that they are at risk from predation by an extremely large specimen of Great Blue Heron that frequents the garden / conservatory. To prevent this, some fishing line has been strung across their pond to keep the large bird from wading unimpeded into their space. The white Koi in this image is sporting a red mark on its back which is actually a wound that it sustained in an encounter with the previously mentioned Great Blue Heron.

These are healthy, happy koi at the new pond in the front entrance of the Phoenix Zoo. I love watching the push and pull of their bodies against the water and each other. It's pure zen.
