Hong Kong Raises Storm Signal as Typhoon Hagupit Nears. by TyphoonHunter

The Hong Kong government issued typhoon signal T1 today as typhoon Hagupit edged closer to the bustling metropolis of  seven million people. Hagupit has intensified into a very strong typhoon with sustained winds of  98mph according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

Earlier today the typhoon grazed the northern coast of the Philippines killing one person and bringing torrential rains and strong winds to the island of Luzon. Current forecasts predict Hagupit will pass just to the south of Hong Kong tomorrow night or early Wednesday morning. Due to the angle at which the storm is approaching the south China coast, any slight movement to the north could greatly increase the chances of a direct hit on Hong Kong.

One person has been killed and about two thousand others displaced as Typhoon Hagupit battered the central and southern Philippines with heavy rain.

Ferry services have been suspended and fishing craft have been barred from setting sail.

Meanwhile Taiwan has issued land and sea warnings as typhoon Hagupit heads towards its southern coast.

Hagupit is expected to brush Taiwan overnight, bringing sustained winds of up to 144 km/h.

It is expected to reach southern China, including Hong Kong, by Wednesday.

I am in Hong Kong awaiting the arrival of the storm and will be reporting it effects live for NowPublic. Please check back here and the following websites for more information.
