Horta de Sant Joan, Spanish Wildfire Kills Six Firefighters
Spanish wildfires that have been raging all week have killed six firefighters so far, the latest dying from burns he suffered four days ago.
The 31-year-old firefighter was an employee of the Catalan regional government and was trapped with four others when the fire suddenly changed direction on Tuesday near Horta de Sant Joan. The four others were killed instantly, but the other firefighter died today.
Another firefighter died Thursday in Aragon when he was burned while driving a truck in eastern Teruel.
Wildfires are not uncommon in Spain during the summer, as the weather is so hot and dry. The Horta de Sant Joan fire is now under control after burning over 2,000 acres. However, the fire in eastern Teruel has so far consumed 17,000 acres and is still burning uncontrolled on sevearl fronts.
800 soldiers have also been deployed to assist in the firefighting.
