How cold does it have to be to cancel school? That's a question on most childrens' lips this evening as they wonder about school tomorrow.

Well, in Iowa, most public schools are closed as it's just too cold to be outside. This is unusual - to dismiss school based on weather conditions, but for safety the school district has decided to cancel school for tomorrow.

Weather information confirmed a forecast of 15 - 20 degrees below zero air temperature, with a predicted wind-chill of 35 - 40 degrees below zero.  At 35 degrees below (wind chill) skin can freeze in a matter of minutes.  Because of this, it is important that children be kept inside during this unprecedented severe weather.

In addition, extremely low temperatures of this nature affect the ability to start and keep buses running reliably.

"...I wonder how a man could send a child actor / to tour in the land of the windchill factor..."

I teach on the Canadian prairie. Our principal is from Saskatoon, so school closures are a rarity. Apparently no matter how cold is gets here, it was always much colder in Saskatoon 'back in the day.'

There are a couple of factors (besides the wind-chill) that get his attention. One is when the windchill plunges to minus 30 or less. The other is already mentioned too - busses. Our school is on the edge of the city so many kids are bussed and if they don't show there's not much point playing school for the rest. Another consideration is frozen pipes. Believe me I'd almost rather freeze than deal with 600 kids and no toilets.

Thanks for posting this story. Cheers and don't forget your woolies eh.
