Is Eyjafjallajokull One of the Hardest Words to Pronounce? How Do You Say it?
Nothing strikes more fear in to the hearts of newscasters and reporters everywhere than a word like Eyjafjallajokull.
The now famous Iceland Volcano has been a hot subject in the news for the past week and even before that, but it appears that anyone outside of Iceland does not know how to pronounce it and some just end up butchering the word.
How Do you Pronounce Eyjafjallajokull?
Even this cannot be readily agreed upon. According to the Huffington Post, the word is pronounced EYE-a-fyat-la-jo-kutl.
However, according to the BBC, the word is pronounced AY-uh-fyat-luh-YOE-kuutl (-uh).
-ay as in day, -fy as in few, -oe as in French coeur, -uu as in boot, the -tl as in atlas. The (-uh) is "a" as in ago.
At least some of the syllables can be agreed upon.
News Reports Around the World Mispronounce Eyjafjallajokull
It seems as if many in Iceland are just sitting back and laughing about the way the name of this volcano is being said. However, a word that contains three of the letter 'j' and four of the letter 'l', that is not an easy word for any English speaking person to say.
Even David Letterman pointed in out on his show, that while this has been one of the most important news topics so far this year, no one seems to know what they are doing when it comes to saying the word.
Still you have to give them props for trying.
