Last night the two Hope for Haiti Telethons were held, one in the United States and one in Canada, and both were very successful in raising money for the people of Haiti still suffering from the effects of the earthquake that hit over a week and a half ago.

PM asks Canadians to donate generously during the Canada For Haiti telethon

In Canada the amout of money raised has been released, with CBC reporting $16 million,  and News1130 citing that telethon raised just over 9.4 million dollars. These differing reports come from the fact that $9.4 Million was raised from English based Canada for Haiti and $6.8 million was raised from the French based Ensemble For Haiti. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that the amount raised will be matched dollar for dollar by the Canadian Government.

The amount for the United States Telethon has not been released yet, because donations are still being accepted as the phone lines remain open, and the songs that were performed by celebrities during the two hour show will be sold on iTunes, and proceeds from that will be included also.

Geroge Clooney was the LA host for the event and he issued an urgent plea to everyone able to donate.

"The Haitian people need our help," Clooney said. "They need to know they are not alone. They need to know that we still care."

The United States telethon was broadcast on over 25 networks and was one of the most widely distributed prime-time benefits in history.

The CBC may have included the money raised in Quebec's telethon?  I can.t find a reference but I think I heard earlier that Quebec raised 6 Million.

Does it matter how much the States raised?  This isn't a contest to see who raised the most...

Yes it matters as there is a trust issue.

I feel for all the victims both that survived the earthquake and those that lost their lives. However, there are a few things that people don't seem to understand. First, these people are suffering even before the earthquake Why does it take something catastrophic to get people's attention that help is needed? Second, while I do feel for the victims, I still don't understand why it is that all these celebrities are just now standing up to help. These celebrities parade around in their fancy/extremely expensive gowns during award ceremonies. Some of these gowns cost so much that the celebrities could feed hundreds if not thousands with the amount spent on one single dress. But on the other hand, we have victims here in the United States. Victims of rape, domestic assault/violence, homeless families, a crumbling economy. The state and county workers who try to help are so swamped and understaffed and don't have nearly enough resources to help the innocent people. How about the celebrities all get together and have a telethon and raise money to build better facilities for orphans and women who are trying to escape their abusive husbands or boyfriends. While I know they can't fix everything and it may seem selfish of me to be saying this, but how many times do people walk or drive past homeless shelters seeing them full or see stories in the newspapers or on the news about another woman with r without her kids that succomb to the fate of a murders hands because she had no where to go to escape the violence. Let's all work together to save as many as we can, not just during times of a major disaster, but all the time. Trust me, if I had the money to help out I would, but I'm a single mom trying to put myself through college and find a better job to support my two kids. I don't collect welfare or live off the system.

Wow Angie T, I think a lot of people feel this way and don't know what to do.  It would be really easy, when you add up all of the problems of the world to get overwhelmed and give up trying to help.  I'm a young, working adult so I asked my father what he thought.  He told me to "think global, act local".  Meaning that small scale contributions add up for big change.  Ideally, everyone would do this all of the time.  My husband and I donated more to Haiti than is normally in our donating budget to give hope that these people can at least get back to the point of surviving.  Right now it looks like the survival of many of them is a big question mark if they don't get enough help.  Good luck with school and being a hard working mom!

You need to get ahold of yourself and really look at the situation in Haiti. We are struggling in N. America but we have food banks, welfare, housing...these people in Haiti have NOTHING. I hope you don't have to lose all you have to realize just what you HAVE!

Liza T. do you realize that the reason that America has what it has is because we work hard for it. I sympathize for the Haitian victims, but I wasn't handed what I have, I had to work for it. You need to get ahold of yourself and realize that Angie T was not criticizing the Haitian people, but is sick of these telethons rising money for aide only during a crisis and not the rest of the times. It is just like during the holidays people are willing to donate to the bell ringers thinking they are helping so much, but in reality need knows no season or holiday it is year round and worldwide. She just seems to be sick of the celebrities who try to portray an image that is better then everyone else and only help when something big happens. That is being a hypocrite.

I have ahold of myself Liza T. I'm not judging the Haitian people like you seem to think. I'm not able to get food from food bank or welfare or housing assistance. I am proud of what I have and I work VERY HARD to keep it. If you would take your nose out of the air long enough and read up on everything that is going on and not just one article, you would see that not only were stations set up in Haiti with food and supplies. However, there were some that felt they needed it all to themselves so they raided the stations stealing whatever they could and police had to flee the area for their own safety because of the rioters. And not to mention that the search efforts have been called off. Now think about it, during other natural disasters around the world, did you see the celebrities do a telethon to help them or make a big deal about help when it was needed. NO you did not.

Angi, I see ~Celebraties do telethons ALL THE TIME !! What planet are you on?

0
Angie T

I'm from the planet of I know how to spell and you don't!!! How many time do you see approximately 20 channels all dedicating their air time to a I personally went through every channel that I've subscribed to from Dish Network and at least 20 of them were showing the telethon including some sports channels. Is that done for other problems in our world. The only other time I've seen that many channels donating their air time like that is when other major disasters have happened or when there is a presidential election happening. The world needs to wake up and realize that the need for help is everyday not just when a disaster has happened.

Oh, just shut up already. You're so heartless, America has It good and doesn't realize It. YOU Don't realize It. Try starving for a month, once you see food, your hungry! and have no choice. Acting like you know everything and you've been there, try living in Haitai for a year, no? I thought so. Be lucky you have a warm comfortable bed to sleep In tonight. How do you know celebrites didn't help out with other national disaters? How do you exactly know that!?!?Have you been to Haitai? No, you havent. Until you gone and step In there shoes for a full day, come back and say what u want to say. Until then, STFU! You fat troll.

First of all dear, not all Americans have it made. In fact, most of America lives in poverty. I'm thankful that I do have a bed to sleep in at night. I really am. I feel for the people in Haiti. It's sad. It really is. However, people in America need to worry about people in America. WE have homeless. If you don't think so, walk the streets of NYC, Boston, Detroit, Sacramento, etc. Sad thing, a lot of those homeless people are past veterens who fought in wars. Our own country has turned on it's own people. Imagine or picture this: YOU, sitting in a cold alley, your bed is a cardboard box, your food is what's in the garbage, your water is what's not frozen in the lake. it's freezing cold out with holes in all your clothes. Your dirty. Homeless. You see people walking past you all day long and just look at you, as they walk by. An earthquake happens in Haiti killing hundreds of thousands, leaving millions homeless. Those same people who look at you daily, walk past you daily just watched a fundraiser-on 12 channels for this god forsaken  country and donate $100. The next day they walk past you again, looking at you...knowing your homeless and live in their own country, and look away...and keep walking...and perhaps you fought in a war for their sorry asses. Now tell me....PRETENDING you are this homeless person in the U.S. ... how do you feel?

I so agree with you. Help and hope should begin at home especially for all our veterans who gave so much during peacetime and wartime. We should take care of our own and then take care or the rest of the world.

Have you been to war? I have, WAR IS HELL, there are a lot of places here in America that out heroes/veterans have it rough. Have you seen all the veterans of foreign  wars sleeping rough? It is a travesty. Do not speak of such things that YOU DO NOT KNOW ABOUT! Charity begins at home.Think of all the military service members on duty around the world protecting your freedom. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!

You are so right Angie! It also seems to me that celebrities don't want to give unless their name is put in print or their face is plastered on the TV for everyone to see. When Katrina hit the US one actor was reported to have paid a news crew to follow him around to up his PR. I can honestly say one person that does donate to womens shelters in the United States is Michael Bolton. Seems like the majority in the public eye want to give to those outside the US and adopt children outside of the US. Just wondering where they are in giving to the needs in America.

I Find It Ironic

Funny how all their millionaires got together to try to raise money from their own people who are now suffering through some of the hardest economic times since the depression.  Yet never once have they lifted a finger to try to help their own people.  I feel deeply for the people in Haiti and other countries, but when people are barely able to keep the food on their table and pay their own bills, that's disgusting that no one helps them at home, just the corporate giants who created this mess and not one celebrity has raised a dime to help their fellow countryman.  There should be sympathy for all - especially your own countryman.  I am sick of these filthy rich people acting like the rest of the world deserves more help than the people in their own country AND asking for that help from the very people they NEVER help who actually need help THEMSELVES.  George Clooney in his Italian villa I guess doesn't understand that Americans are suffering right now and that the way of life that people take for granted in America is slowly, but surely disappearing right before our eyes.

Maybe theres poor people in

The poor people in America don't even come close to those in Haiti. If someone is starving in America they can go to a food bank, and if their homeless they can go to a shelter. Yet, in Haiti if you are starving you just die of hunger. Many of the poor people in America have a car, a house, a cell phone, a flat screen TV, an oven, a microwave, a sink, water, etc...The people in Haiti have absolutely nothing, whereas

@maybe there's poor people in america...but... Oh really?? Tell that to the 56 y/o homeless veteran who froze to death in NYC last night... oh nevermind, you can't...it's too late. Tell that to the 8 kids that live in the alley who get their food out of the garbage. You make me sick. If something like this happened in America do you HONESTLY think countries would pull together to get us back together? Absolutely not.  When Katrina happened... what countries donated millions to help get our people homes?? Doh! Noone. Let me ask you this...ever visit St. Jude's?? Seeing the thousands of young children who die or dying of cancer? How about you take your $100 that you donated to Haiti...and donate it to the St. Jude's foundation?? Try to help get a cure for all the cancers. That way maybe my neighbor won't have to bury her 5 month old son who has neuroblastoma. Or how about your local food pantry??? Feed your own people.
