Malaysia seems to have found a clever way to increase forest cover: Plant more rubber trees.

But if you have to clear virgin jungle to do it, this may not do planet earth any good.

The news items may be long, but it's compelling reading. We may be deluded into thinking that forest cover is increasing when it's not.

When natural forests give way to single-species tree farms, the forest’s ecology will begin to unravel.
