By, Uwe Paschen.
Now I could site countless studies and even argus all sides and site counter studies and site credentials of well respected Universities and Research labs that we all have heard of and read resumes and news reports off, I will spare my self the agony and just write an OPINION post without all the facts and studies as I did so many times already in the past! So you may be up in arms and comment to the contrary as much as you desire and then I could bombard you with studies and facts! However what would be the point? If you have not understood the message by the end of this post you may never understand and there for be part of the problem and not the solution as one would hope! The overall climate in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia as well as in other parts of the World has changed over the past century, now the problem is that some of those changes and variables are normal, there are weather pattern that only happen every decade or every century and then they are the climate changes that are due to pollution such as CO2, Methane Gas, Dioxin and other factor as well such as Volcanos and Earth quakes!  In Japan the average Temperature has risen by 3 Degree Celsius over all and the Water Temperatures of the Japan See have gone up by 1.5 Degree Celsius over the past decade alone. the acidification of the Ocean has increased by 0.7 PH points meaning that the PH of 9 went down to a PH of 8.3, wish is significant and one of the main reason why the Coral reefs are dying and why Crust-ace are in trouble!
The main factors for the Oceans death are the rise in the Water temperature, the change in the salt percentage of the water due to the massive melt down of the Ice and glaciers and the change in the PH due to an increase of the CO2! Now do remember that the largest amount of Oxygen produced on Earth is coming from the Oceans at about 70% total Oxygen production and the rest from the Forest, especially the Amazon Forest!
Yet even the Forest is being producing less Oxygen in the past two Decades and absorbing less CO2 because of the change in the Climate overall! The Irony though is that even though the overall temperatures are going up on Earth, some parts of the planet may soon face an Ice age due to the change in the Ocean currents affected by the change in the Percentage of the salt contend! To the point that Europe could actually face its worth Ice age yet! Once the Coral reef and crust-ace dead the hole life cycle will be interrupted and an increase in Methane Gas will be a direct effect of this change! The vicious cycle wont stop there though, due to the increase of Methane Gas and CO2 the temperatures will rise even faster and melt all the remaining Ice of the Antarctica and cause the exposure of organic matter that has been frozen for Millions of years and will now decompose and cause yet even more Methane gas to escape as well as CO2!  All this may bring the Oxygen production to a dead halt and change the earth into a planet a lot like Mercury rather then Mars. Should the Earth ever recover after that, it would take at least a million years to do so! Humanity would be long gone and so all the rest with it! Domes day? No reality if we do not wake up in a hurry!

Paschen, I like this story. "Apocalypse now", necessary to talk about it, we don't like the message, so needs to be repeated. The Methane, released from Antarctica ice destroys the Ozone layer faster than CO2. What is your opinion about a "climate engineering group", or more radical terraforming (remaking the planet, refill ozone layer...)

0
PlanMyGreen

I doubt terraforming would ever succeed without changing what is going on now.  We need to change how we treat the environment first an then clean up our messes, and we won't have to worry about developing technology to create a synthetic environment.

0
Paschen

You are correct in you comment here PlanMyGreen, Terra forming could only succeed once the Pollution would have stopped and the effect of our past pollution be reversed! Wish as you say would make the terra forming idea irrelevant!

0
Paschen

Well, Engineering groups are needed and will help, however they do need Political and public support and financing! Terra Forming is only possible once we stop the Pollution and abuse! Yes, Methane Gas will be a greater problem then CO2 and the researcher realised in the last two years that they made a big calculation mistake by forgetting to take into account the Bio Mass of the areas in Greenland and Antarctica as well as Northern Canada and Northern Russia that have been kept looked by the per-ma frost  for millions of years and will now be released! We need some very radical action and solution, if we even want to have a chance of winning this battle! The results of the Paris Convention of 2002 have to be implemented now!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.  The rising temperatures are two fold.  Melting ice lowers the salinity (more water, same salt), and raising temperatures lowers the specific gravity(salt density).  Though this is opinion, I would guess higher temperatures would cause more of an effect on specific gravity than adding the amount of water that has melted.  Unfortunately, raising temperatures melts ice adding more fresh water, so the problem is compounded.  They come as a package.

BTW, I love the title Paschen, I couldn't have ignored that if I tried.

0
Paschen

You are correct, the temperature does change the density of the Salt content and the additional water lowers its salinity! All those that have a Marine aquarium know that all to well and understand the grave impact that any, even the smallest change can have!

We do have a problem on Earth today and regardless of who may be at fault or what may be the causes, we need to fix it and fix it fast! All Human resources and energy needs to go into the environment now or we may not have to worry much longer about little problems like Russia, the USA or China and India!

I'm not sure I can see the wood for the trees here, Paschen.  You seem to suggest thgat everything is going wrong.  Maybe it is but there are things we can fix and some things are easier or more important than others.  The copenhagen Consensus (OK you may not agree with their findings) some years ago, tried to puit a price on doing different things so that at least we had a sense of the comparative costs of making improvements.  Whast came out as by far the cheapest was doing something about malnutrition, improving water supply access and sanitatyion  (and attacking malara).  OK they were against tackling climate change at the time b ut at leasy we know how to plan a strategy for change that is achievable and the resultys measurable.  In spite of your scepticism about research and evidence, these things are important!

0
Paschen

That is exactly the point here Gerry! We could fix many things, if we just stopped looking for excuses and blaming our nabbers for the problems! If we would finally acknowledge the problems and face them head on we would actually have a good chance to fix the mess!

However, keeping once ears and eyes as well as mouth shot and hopping it would go away and let others worry about it won't fix any thing nor help us!

I do agree with the Copenhagen Consensus as I do agree with the Paris convention of some 2000 Scientist in 2002 and 2003! I do agree with the UNO findings and recommendations as well!

The point here is we better stop winning and tossing blames and locking for countless excuses and start doing major work or we will face an environmental catastrophe that will without a doubt result in a humanitarian catastrophe world wide!

Thank you for the comment here Gerry, Much Appreciated!

Is that not what the Millenium Goals are about?  Having clear objectives and then measuring our specific progress so that we can work out what we need to do next?  Although Im sceptical about some of them, we are making progress on oithers.

0
Paschen

Yes, that is what the Millennium Goals was and is about Gerry!

The main problem though is that we miss calculated the hole effect that the CO2 and Methane gas have on our climate change and what impact our pollution has on the Earth, meaning we where way to conservative here and that the problem and the speed at wish it is progressing is far greater that we originally believed it to be!

The other problem and that being the main factor here of this post, is that way to many are still in denial and refuse to even conceder taking action to counter pollution and even less to clean up past pollution such as Dioxide, Radioactive material and so on!

We need more action and we need it Yesterday! The Pollution problem is expotancial andmultiplies it self by it self each and every Year so to speak!

Meaning we are reaching critical mass or the critical point a lot sooner then we believed we would originally!

James Loveteck a well know scientist and advocate that has over the Years published many books on the subject and done extensive research on it, he used to say we need to stop polluting and we will fix the problem and all may be fine! Today though James Loveteck is saying in his last Book "The revenge of Gaya", "We are to late! All we can do now is sit back and wash our own apocalypse!"

Now I for one hope he will be proven wrong, however, if we do not get our act together in a hurry he may very well be right in his assessment!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.

The rain forests have been decimated, the coral reefs are dying, the polar ice-caps seems to melting, there's hardly any good drinking water left anymore, the air is not fit to breath in most cities, the honeybees have diappeared, and there's no salmon left on America's west coast ...

I just don't see the problem here ... I am pulling the covers back up over my ears and going back to sleep ...

Call me when there's a real problem ...

Hello Emilio, Thanks for the comment here, :) right on! Well said and well put!

Remember the statue of the three monkeys? the first one covert his Ears, the second one covert his Eyes and the third one covert his Mouth! This statue does say it all!

Thanks for the Comment here and Flag!, Much appreciated!

Paschen,
The content of the posts is very informative though its kinda scary.. im not ready to meet the dooms day but is doing works to eradicate the common cause of environmental destruction. In the rotary, an organization where I belong, somehow have done so much effort to promote clean and green. Lately, we have been conducting seminars teaching how to avoid polluting the earth. Simple remedies will cause really a big deal if cooperate and start with your ownself..more power!

Very Good comment pinkberry143 and I would agree, nor am I ready to meet the dooms day yet, why i did write this post, sort of to wake every one up!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Humans are pretty smart and given the will, can come up with some creative solutions to impending environmental disaster.  The big problem is the will to change.  When I hear people caught up in acquiring the latest consumer goods and complaining that complete sewage treatment costs too much, I despair that humanity will change until its made to.  Think globally, act locally is just so many words to the majority.

Thank you Barbara McPherson for you comment here as well for the Flag.

Yes, we human are smart and creative, we could solve most of our problems once we put our minds to it, however the main problems are remaining, namely egocentrism, greed and disconcert to the reality! As you say our consumer society is still to much of a priority to most and the lack of Global awareness is pertinent! Thank you for the read and comment here, I appreciate it very much!

We need the Project Genesis device from Star Trek, Tera-forming in one big explosion.

Keep sharing your words of wisdom Paschen!

Thank you for the read here and comment as well as the Flag! I do appreciate it World_Groove! Yes, Star Trek technology would be nice just about now, However even the Genesis Probe from Star Trek did end up failing! I think it will end up being up to us individuals to make the change from a Capitalist system based on Grows and profit to a sustainable system based on value and Life!

Paschen, While this is much needed to be worked on from all levels on this planet, like you and others stated - I also have hope.

Has anyone made the time machine yet?  While it is far fetched in thought - who's to say it would not change anything or even a part of the problems, we have and face today and in our future.

Three points in time to go back to and present changes to those of that time:

1st - 1887 Detroit, Michigan find Henry Ford explain what he creates use alternative fuel source (vegetable oil).

1st (a) - Return in latter part of 1904 giving insight to 1950's technology and explain more or less if changes have been made from the first visit 1887.

2nd - 1887 Nikola Tesla just after the buy out of his AC patent by Westinghouse and explain how his technological thoughts would help mankind using his free energy source from the earth and then go to Colorado Springs 12 years earlier.

3rd - Is any guess or choice of times to go back to better these times we face.

Hope has grace.

Interesting comment and yet some of that did happen in a way. Wile H. Ford was working on his concept in France some Engineers where perfecting the Hydrogen Car and in Germany H. Porsche was building the Electric car, all 3 concept where equally effective and performed equally well, the Hydrogen Car was though the one that performed the best from all. It was Rockefeler that pushed the Gasoline engine and made it the norm since he had great interest in making money with his newly discovered Oil fields and invested heavily in Oil. From the beginnings it was all about Money, not about efficient energy or engines. Thank you for the Comment and flag here, I do appreciate it.

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.

And still some people (McCain-Palin) think ther is no global warming or a climate crisis.

great insight mr. paschen.this issue of climatic change is not a new phenomena.if we simply follow the last 10000 years ice age history..we can come to a conclusion and that is climate is all about change..............why creating fear psychosis amongst people.what ever had been done by developed world for there so called developement that cant be unfased.so spread the message of eco sensitivity not eco fear.

0
Paschen

As I said we have always known climate changes to some extent, however the greatest-Temperature changes of the Earth History since the Dinosaurs has never ever been as fast nor as dramatic as in the past 50 years. If we would not pollute as much and cause all the CO2 and Methane production as well aerosols and other deadly chemicals we produce in excess we would not have destroyed the Ozone layer nor have to worry about Oxygen depletion today, does factors are Human made and cause a rise in Temperature that has never been seen before in earth history. The time for sensitivity has long past, you better start being afraid. I for one do start to favour the extinction of the Human race or its near to total extinction. We are the main problem and our failure to change our ways is putting at risk every life form making us a cancer like medium that needs to be killed in order to save the host, in this case the Earth. Or the Cancer will destroy the host and it self.

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff. There is a biblical truth that agrees with your opinion, decadence started at the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve decided to live and do  their own way.
