A Celebrity Sushi Restaurant and Chef Charged With Serving Sei Whale Meat

The Hump restaurant in Los Angeles, a sushi restaurant, and its celebrity chef, Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, have been charged with serving whale meat, which is illegal in the United States. It violates the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Typhoon Restaurant Inc., which is the parent company of The Hump has been charged in federal court along with 45-year-old Kiyoshiro Yamamoto with the illegal sale of a marine mammal product.

The charges came about due to a sting operation by the director of The Cove, the recent Oscar winning movie about the dolphin slaughter in Taiji.

Director Louie Psihoyos says his documentary team began investigating the restaurant in October after being tipped off by friends that it had raw slices of whale meat on its menu.

When the operation was conducted, two animal rights activists entered the restaurant and ordered a $600 sushi meal, one of which was told to them to be whale meat by the waiters. In the video a viewer can hear them calling the dish 'kujira', saying it costs $60 a plate.

The activists put slices of it in a bag and took it to be examined at the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University. Findings confirmed that the meat was from a Sei whale, which is an endangered species sometimes hunted by the Japanese in the North Pacific.

Punishment for this kind of offense could be a $20,000 fine and a year in prison.

I hope they learn their lesson.

1) The biggest threat to whales are not Japanese restaurants but the American military and commercial shipping to include luxury cruises.  2) The Japanese treat their food with a great deal of respect; nothing is wasted.  Compare that to this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLZdrPwp5vs&feature=related

This is way to disgusting. They are going against what they actually want the world to know about their culture that is being harmony with nature. Respect earth and all of that. Please, action speak louder than words. No wonder there is stereotype about Japanese being sly and fake. It's so shameful.

I dunno who you mean by "they"? I've lived in Japan for 10 years and met all kinds of people with all kinds of opinions. But if we must talk generalizations, traditional Japanese culture was very respectful of nature, based on the Shinto belief system. Then a certain American fellow called Admiral Perry rocked up in 1853, and basically said, "if you don't trade with us, we'll blow you up."What followed was the industrialization of Japan, at first based primarily on technologies developed in Europe and the USA. They found our ways so inspiring they even decided to copy our empire-building... WW2.... US occupation.... Miracle economy... Bubble collapse.... Huge public spending on construction et al, basically concreting the environment (following John Maynard Keynes' macroeconomic model).... Growing environmental problems and public disillusionment with politics and corruption.... Gradual awakening of citizens to their civil responsibilities and the potential of people power. (This last paragraph is pretty much the same pattern as what has happened in other developed nations). And now there is a huge and growing environmental movement in Japan, same as in the Western countries. As for fish and whales; Unless most of us drastically curb our fish eating habit, the ocean ecosystem is apparently going to collapse. The sushi boom is the worst thing for the oceans, along with long-line fishing etc. And the sushi boom is a worldwide phenomena, fueled by demand. Also, that the chef was selling whale in the US. That means there was demand for it there. It is you and I as consumers and teachers of each other who can put a stop to this.As for "sly and fake", probably every government in the world deserves this title, both yours and mine (UK) too. But to label everyone in the US and the UK as "sly and fake" because their governments lied about WMDs in Iraq is like an alien receiving a red rose in the post from earth and then assuming all flowers here are red.... Or something like that!Be groovy brother!

I think that this whole thing has been blown way out....Not defending Hump.. Just that because it was here & that the Peeps from the COVE Movie have that much weight to put the light & blame on them that it is being pumped up more than it would have if it were only discovered by Law Enforcement & not the Media first.. Japan eats Whale, Turtle, Horse & things that you can possibly not even imagine.. Then again there are countries that Eat Monkey & all sorts of things you would probably call a Pet.... Sorry to say that here in Tinsel Town the Media seems to have it all served up with lots of Drama...
