Hurricane Bill 2009: Projected Path and Update
Hurricane Bill is the first hurricane to form in the 2009 season, with a projected path headed towards the Southeast coast of the United States. As of 5 a.m. on August 17, 2009 the storm has a maximum sustained wind speed of 75 mph with gusts upwards of 90 mph and is moving WNW at 22 mph.
Bill reached hurricane strength Monday morning in the Central Atlantic, and is now located about 1160 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Bill currently has winds near 75 miles per hour.
Tropical Storm Bill is forecast to move west-northwest through the open tropical Atlantic over the next few days while steadily gaining strength. If fact, Bill may be a major hurricane (category three or higher) by midweek.
The current forecast track calls for Bill to miss the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico to the north. However, these areas should still monitor this systems progress over the next several days due to the uncertainty in forecasts farther out in time. Even if Bill does in fact miss the islands to the north, rough surf and dangerous rip currents will be possible along the beaches of these islands in the coming days.
Residents and visitors of Bermuda should also monitor the progress of Hurricane Bill very closely.
There's a good chance that rough surf may also impact the East Coast of the United States this weekend and early next week if Bill follows its current forecast path.

I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS SITE IS NOT CURRENT.
AT THIS TIME WE ARE 1:00, TUES 8/18/09.
ON MY ISLAND OF ST. THOMAS, US VIRGIN ISLANDS, WE ARE NOT EVEN MENTIONED ON THE WEATHER CHANNELS REGARDING HURRICANE BILL. NOR HAVE WE BEEN GIVEN INFO RELATED TO HURRICANES WHICH HAVE RAVAGED OUR ISLAND(S) IN PREVIOUS YEARS. (MY HUSBAND & I HAVE LIVED HERE SINCE 1971).
WE ARE SOON GOING TO TAKE DOWN OUR SATELLITE DISHES, NOT KNOWING THE CURRENT PATH OF "BILL"!
PLEASE GIVE THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS MORE CONSIDERATION WHEN REPORTING MAJOR WEATHER SITUATIONS WHICH MAY POTENTIALLY AFFECT OUR AREA.
THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION,
LINDA

I agree wholeheartedly, Linda. My parents live on a sailboat down there and I can't ever contact them during severe weather and the only information I can ever find is whether the storms will hit the big land mass. What about the people who are worried about the islands that will be affected BEFORE it hits the continental US? It doesn't seem to make news until a coastal state is in the radar.

See http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200903.html
It is not tracking anywhere near the Caribbean so that is probably why it is not on the news. It is tracking to the west of Bermuda by Saturday.
