Hurricane Camille struck the US gulf coast on August 17, 1969: today is the 40th anniversary of Hurricane Camille's landfall. Hurricane Camille struck Cuba, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi directly, deluging the Ohio Vallen, Virginia, and West Virginia with wet weather and high winds.

256 people were killed in total, with over 100 death occurring in Virginia, due to mudslides and flooding.

“Built back like they were, where they were before which we're trying not to do that now we're trying to get people to build back in a safer and stronger way,” says Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway.
No matter the record set at the time, people who lived through Camille say they don't compare to Hurricane Katrina.

Still, Hurricane Camille was a cCategory 5 storm, with 190mph winds and stirring up 24-foot waves. Camille's effectsw were felt as far north as Virginia, where over 100 people were killed in floods and mudslides.

Cleanup cost an estimated $21.2 billion dollars.($21,200,000,000)
