As millions returned to work, hurricane force gales and rain added more misery to the January blues.

The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for much of the country and forecasters told those living in the North to prepare for possible floods and destruction from gale-force winds.

Scotland was braced for the harshest weather as the Met Office put out severe weather warnings for both snow and hurricane force winds.
