FALLEN trees, broken powerlines and disrupted transport caused chaos across the country as 110mph gales and heavy rain battered Britain.

As millions returned to work, hurricane force gales and rain added more misery to the January blues.

The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for much of the country and forecasters told those living in the North to prepare for possible floods and destruction from gale-force winds.
