Updated for August 28, 2011: Hurricane Irene has hit New England, and has since been downgraded to a tropical storm. There has been widespread flooding in the area, and at least two people have been killed in New Jersey, including a firefighter.

There was some flooding and downed trees in New York City, and the subway, buses and trains will most likely not be back to full operational capacity for Monday, August 29.

Hurricane Irene hit North Carolina early on August 27 as a Category One storm, with sustained winds of 85mph. The end of the pier at Atlantic Beach, NC has collapsed, and widespread flooding is reported across the Outer Banks. Around 200,000 people are without electricity as high winds tear down power lines.

So far, 11 people have been killed in Hurricane Irene.

Hurricane Warnings are in place for North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, coastal Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
