Evacuations Ordered Ahead of Hurricane Irene

As Hurricane Irene approaches the United States, barrier islands along the East Coast are getting evacuation orders.

The most recent evacuation orders pertain to Cape May, New Jersey and Ocean City, Maryland. New York Governor Mario Cuomo declared a State of Emergency, and New York City evacuations are a very real possibility, especially in the Rockaways.

Hurricane Irene is expected to reach New York City by August 28. the Twitter feeds below will help you keep up with coastal evacuation notices.

If you get the word to evacuate your neighborhood, don't wait until the last second to leave, as traffic buildup is inevitable. You do not want to get hit by a hurricane while you're sitting in gridlock: you'll be target practice for wind-borne objects.

Have a Hurricane Survival Kit Ready

If you are not evacuating and you are in Irene's projected path, make sure you are properly supplied to ride out a hurricane. Check out Miami.gov's printable hurricane survival kit checklist (pdf).
