While New York City got off easy after Hurricane Irene swept through, the inland was not so luck. Upstate New York, Vermont, and suburban New Jersey were hit particularly hard.

Bridges, roads and railways have been swamped or destroyed by Irene. Westchester County and Dutchess County have suffered particularly extensive flooding. Vermont, which isn't even a coastal state, also faced serious flooding.
At least 35 people were killed by Hurricane Irene. You can see eyewitness video footage of the flooding below, which features partially-submerged buildings and a car being swept downstream.
