Hurricane Jimena Forms in the Pacific as Storm Danny Weakens
Hurricane Jimena forms in the Pacific as a Category 1 storm today, as tropical storm Danny become a depression and dumps heavy rain on the eastern seaboard with some dangerous currents along the coast, closing some of the beaches again.
Hurricane Jimena currently has winds of 80 mph and is off the coast of Mexico at the moment. Jimena is the 10th storm of the season and is expected to become stronger by Sunday as it makes its way along the Mexican coast and the southern Baja California peninsula.
Danny spun miles offshore in the Atlantic, causing mostly a rain event in the East.
The rains from Tropical Storm Danny even affected Ted Kennedy's funeral procession.
Heavy rain is still falling on Massachusetts and ferry services have been canceled. Winds could get up to 40 mph around Cape Cod.
"We getting a number of reports of two to four inches of rain in the area," said Kim Buttrick, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton, Mass. "Wind isn't a factor now, but a wind advisory is in effect for the islands until this evening."
New Jersey has reported waves along their beaches as high as 6 to 8 feet, and they could get even higher. However, the weather is expected to improve overnight.
In North Carolina people are being warned to stay away from the water as the seas could be dangerous, and a young boy has already gone missing in the area when he was using a body board near the town of Corolla. He has not been found yet.
20 beaches have been closed in New York's Long Island due to heavy rain.
