Hurricane Tomas November 5: Hits Haiti (Projected Path)
Hurricane Tomas is Currently Passing Between Haiti and Southeastern Cuba
Tropical Storm Tomas became Hurricane Tomas overnight and hit the southwestern tip of Haiti with 88 mph winds, and although it is going to spare Port-Au-Prince a direct hit, residents still reeling from the earthquake are concerned about their tent encampments being blown away or flooded.
At least one person has confirmed to have died trying to cross a swollen river, and heavy rains have already caused concern about possible mudslides coming down from the mountains and disrupting the lives of those below.
The Haitian government and workers for relief organizations mounted an effort to get people in the tent camps to seek safer ground, perhaps with friends or relatives, but the effort met confusion and frustration.
Some relief vans that were supposed to evacuate the earthquake survivors from a tent camp in Corail left the area empty-handed after residents expressed concern that while they were evacuated their stuff and tents would be looted and they would lose everything.
The aid workers eventually came back with United Nations soldiers according to the New York Times, and after much negotiation they were able to move a few hundred people. The people place little trust in authority and even doubted a storm was coming as they are still trying to rebuild their lives from the devastating January earthquake.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Tomas is moving north-northwest and is expected to continue moving forward for the next 24 to 36 hours.
