Ice road truckers who connect far north communities are getting stuck in Manitoba muskeg.  The ice roads have deteriorated so badly that the big trucks are bogging down in the muskeg or what is also known as 'loon s---'.  Some drivers have become separated from their convoys and have had to radio for assistance.
This ice road season has been the shortest on record with a late start and now an early breakup due to warm weather.

On Monday, the provincial government declared the road system would be closed as of midnight. That means the provincial insurance won't cover any damages sustained by vehicles on the roads.

These ice roads are essential to the northern communities in hauling in food and other supplies which will last the summer.  They are constructed quickly in the fall after freeze up and cross frozen lakes and boggy areas that, while never safe, are usually solid enough to bear the weight of the heavy trucks.  The ice roads are the only way to move heavy equipment into these remote areas.  Lighter materials can be delivered by bush planes, but the cost of air transport is very high.  This will leave many settlements in the north short of supplies for the summer months.
The extensive warming of the Arctic may be yet another signal of the global warming phenomenon.  The past few years have seen a warming trend in Canada's North West Territories.
This season is no fluke: With the exception of two springs, 2002 and 2004, seasonal temperatures in the Canadian Arctic have remained above normal for the past eight years.

That sucks for them. It's only going to get warmer too I think.

Building proper highways may be the only answer but the population is just too small and too short on income to support the cost of such a massive highway project.  these folks need an innovative solution!
